The hotel itself is old, and not in the best condition; however, the staff is excellent. They went out of their way to help with my luggage, which was a lot because I was moving to France. They took care of everything for me, including a nice French breakfast, wifi, directions, and a clean hotel room. My French is not the greatest either, but they went out of their way to make sure I was settled, fed, and rested.

"Great for easy going solo travelers and couple's"
I had originally planed on staying for 5 days and booked a Standard Room, and later decided to add on a day at the beginning of my trip. There were no Standard rooms left, so I went with a Single room.
I arrived right around check-in time and was able to get right into my room. I will admit here, that when I first walked in I thought of Whoopi Goldberg's room from Sister Act. This room was SMALL and very basic, and looked like it had never been updated. The bathroom was also small and took some acrobatics climbing in and out of the shower (over the toilet). However the bed was extremely comfy and I had no problems sleeping that night. The next day I was moved into my Standard room that contained a full/queen size bed, as opposed to the double I booked (no complaints here!) This room was large, freshly renovated and amazing. The bathroom absolutely blew me away! It had top of the line amenities and came with a tub, rather than a shower, which took some getting used to. (They did provide a small soap bar and packet of shampoo, but just bring your own).
The stairs are as steep as everyone implies. If you have multiple bags, this could be a problem (especially when leaving with full suitcases) and the walls are pretty thin. Bring ear plugs just in case. But the beds were comfy, the staff extremely friendly and nice and really just a perfect area to stay in. St. Sulpice is the closest station, and it's easy to get to any major attractions. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

It would be unfair to rate this small and typically Parisian hotel too harshly, as its official 1* grading reflects what it is - relatively cheap and cheerful. If you don't want basic, book elsewhere, but for a place to lay your head there are far worse in Paris.
One up from a hostel, it's perhaps beyond the hostel price range and without some of the contemporary facilities the newer hostels offer, but affords privacy and, if you're looking for it, the degree of anonymity, that hostels don't tend to.
Location is right opposite Gare de L'est on Bld de Strasbourg, so great if you're using the station to arrive/depart, and not too far either if you're coming into Gare du Nord.
There is no lift, so being accommodated in a 6th floor (top) room might have been a trek had I been of older generation or carrying more bags. The room was clean. Sparsely furnished, it comprised basic but comfortable bed, hanging space, desk, fully functioning TV with local channels, wash basin and separate WC/shower space.
While there was inevitable noise from outside, it wasn't sufficient to disturb sleep
