This is very much a hotel for people travelling on a budget - if you're looking for comfort more than functionality, this is probably not the hotel for you! There is no lift and our room was right at the top of several staircases - not all of our windows locked either, which wouldn't have been such a problem had there not been a public-access balcony right outside. So whilst it was all kept clean and functional, it is a little rough around the edges. Similarly, the advertised breakfast was actually a croissant and coffee provided three doors down at a local cafe - it was very nice, but not exactly as we had been led to believe! However, the hotel was very close to the train station, which was useful, and the area had some nice pizzerias and gelaterias nearby. It's quite a trek to most of the famous sites on foot, but only twenty minutes from the Colosseum and Forum, which was ideal for us as that was one of our main interests. The staff were very friendly and overall we did have a very reasonable stay for a decent price.

The centrally located San Giovanni neighborhood is named after the stunning Archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope. Near Porta Maggiore, one of the gateways of the Aurelian Walls, the area is full of shopping, such as on Via Appia Nuova and in Piazza Re di Roma. Every year, this area hosts the popular 1st of May concert.
