This is a family run hotel. The son speaks reasonable English but everyone else speaks French making it a very authentic experience.
Due to car trouble we arrived late but we were still made very welcome (including our two West Highland Terriers!)
We ate in the restaurant. The 20 and 22 euro menus were excellent and the portions were very generous. They were happy to provide vegetarian options. All of the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was also lovely with apple juice from the local village.
They phoned a local garage to have our car towed and when it was ready they took us to the garage to pick it up. While the car was being repaired we spent the morning by the swimming pool in the extensive park.
Anyone who stays in a chain hotel in preference to this must be crazy!

This hotel is certainly not posh, but it is comfortable and the staff is helpful (especially Agnes). The price is definitely right, however.
Briancon has many things to offer the tourist. The old town is very nice and you are very close to the mountains for hiking, cycling, etc.

Le Chastellan is on the edge of Valberg village about a three minute walk from the piste. It is quite basic but clean and friendly. I would have liked tea and coffee in the rooms although I know that most basic French hotels don't ofer this. Also, the shower is in a hip bath which is a little strange! Overall a good hotel in a lovely resort.

Good hotel and central location (which meant could be a bit noisy at night). Unfortunately a few of the locks on the windows and patio door did not work compromising security but overall the hotel was good. Free wifi was very useful.
