This hotel was nice and had a nice restaurant and pool. There was safe parking. The only three issues were that: 1. It is a bit far from the Sea so you definitely have to drive to the sea (they did say they had a complimentary shuttle for short distances so this may go to the sea but we didn't use it).
2. Our room did not have a sea view, in fact our room did not have any view, the view was onto a tiny artificial garden (exclusively our units garden) but surrounded by high walls and you wouldn't actually use the garden as it was small.
3. It may only have been present in our room on the Mezannine floor but as we were above the garage we could hear the car guards talking and this was annoying when trying to sleep in the morning.

The best thing about the hotel is its proximity to a shopping mall. In fact it is part of the mall complex. I stayed there because I did shopping and went to the cinemas and restaurants. It is also 20 minutes from the airport. The free internet was a bonus.
I did not feel very welcome when I checked in though. I felt like I was intruding on their chatting. The rest of the time, the staff were helpful, especially at the breakfast buffet.
I am not a fan of the bathroom layout that is open to the whole room.

Booked realising the hotel was at the far end of the Golden Mile but was very satisfied. The room were excellent, likewise the staff. It would obviously help to have a car (there is ample parking). However, the beach is walking distance and it seems to be a safe area. There is also a bus outside the front door which connects all the way to Kings Park, ideal as we were there to watch rugby. The owners have done an excellent job converting a derelict building into a smart hotel. It was fairly quiet when we were there, which was unfortunate.

The hotel is now looking a bit tired but they are undergoing a massive renovation including a big extension which will make this a lovely place to stay in Umhlanga. Even now its a great location and we enjoyed our stay. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the staff were very helpful. Only issue is parking which you have to pay for but parking is at a premium in this area so no real complaints

THIS IS AN OLDER 150 YEAR OLD HOTEL THAT IS IN THE MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN DURBAN. IT IS A WONDERFUL VALUE FOR THE MONEY. A LOT OF TOURISTS SEEM TO STAY IN THE NORTHERN SUBURBS OF DURBAN HOWEVER THEY ARE MISSING OUT ON THE VALUE OF THIS HOTEL BY STAYING DOWNTOWN. IT HAS A PARKING GARAGE ATTACHED BY A COVERED WALKWAY AT A COST OF AROUND 3.50 US DOLLARS A NIGHT. BREAKFAST IS SERVED IN THE HISTORIC DINING ROOM WHERE QUEEN ELIZABETH DINED IN 1999 OR 1999 AND THE BUFFET WAS EXCELLENT ( AND INCLUDED WITH THE ROOM RATE WE GOT).
THE ROOMS ARE CLEAN AND HAVE EVERYTHING YOU COULD WANT INCLUDING FREE INTERNET. IT IS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM CITY HALL AND THE DOWNTOWN SHOPPING AREAS ARE ON THE SAME STREET AS THE HOTEL.

I stayed at this hotel for the New Year and I was pleasantly surprised when I was offered a free room because they forgot to provide me with an extra bed/couch I requested when I was booking the hotel.
The staff was friendly and I cannot fault the food.
I would stay again in this hotel and highly recommend it.

I've stayed there many times within the past year and a half. I love the Durban area. But it would appear that the price of the hotel is going up but the level of service is going down. From Sleeping Security Guards to rude housekeepers. The housekeeper came by my room to clean I told her to please come back later she rolled her eyes and me sucked her teeth and walked away she never came back. I don't want to say not to stay there but I sincerly want them to approve their services, so much has changed in a little time. They are undergoing rennovations but it's not a problem they only worked during the week and not on the weekend I never heard any noise.
