"Basic but clean and friendly hotel, in city centre"
We didn't need anything posh, just a base to be tourists from. The room was better than basic, very clean, and had its own bathroom. We emailed and asked specifically for a room at the back as we had read on trip advisor that the local streets can be a bit noisy at night. We received an email confirming that we had a back room. The first night it was quite noisy as we had the window open, an unseasonably hot autumn, and had not discovered the air con. The next night we closed the window and all was fine.
The breakfast was basic, two rolls and a pastry with Juice and either tea or coffee, I saw people ask for 2nds with no trouble, it set us up nicely for the day. We could have had it in our room if we wanted.
The staff were friendly and polite, and offered us advice when asked.
There are lots of trendy bars and eateries in the two local streets some of them doing an kind of after work deal of a snack (eg quiche) and a drink (eg wine or beer) for about 4 euros.
Nice little place to use as a base to visit the city from and not very far from all the sites.

Excellent quiet room, comfortable beds, very good free internet, nice functional bathroom, and good climate control. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Easy walking to shopping at MARS with a very good array of eating choices - nothing else close by.
Apart from a single news station - CNN - no English TV. Good 20 minute walk to the waterfront, but well worth it.
Sadly there is no airport transfer as stated in the Expedia writeup. It is 17-18 euros for a cab. When you can take the underground from the airport for minimal cost into downtown Porto it makes the price somewhat less appealing.

"Perfect guest house, 3 minutes from the metro line"
Very helpful, knowledge of everywhere in town to go and how much things cost. First thing they sat me down and opened up a map and said what would you like to see or do during your stay, they then drew out exactly how I could get around the town and explained how to find the metro line and how to use it.
They upgraded me without any charge, had free wifi throughout the guest house too.
I throughly recommend that you think of the Boavista Guest House, it is 75% cheaper than over priced places like 'The Grande Porto Hotel' and from what I saw of that place it was living on old fortunes, completely didn't deserve to charge people the prices it did.

I would return to this hotel if we were ever in Porto again. Our studio apartment was quite nice and modern. They had an Ikea crib set up for our infant in our room with really pretty/fun baby print linen. The room was nicely decorated and clean. We had a view of the park across the street. We walked to the downtown area twice in about 30minutes. The park across the street is also a noted in the tourist book as is a church 5 minutes walk away. We also took the metro to and from downtown and we went to the beach and caught bus 502 close to the hotel. There is no front desk and we never saw hotel staff. We received the codes in an email to the hotel and all worked as planned. Our hotel room wasn't serviced but we were there 4 days and we don't need new linen or towels for four days. We could have used more toilet paper so we went out and bought some. For the price of this hotel it was really great.
