"A good basic place for a Business Traveller"
When I booked to stay at this hotel I was looking for a clean place to stay in a central location with staff who could speak English and help me with my queries at a decent price. The hotel met will all these expectations in full! It has a clean environment with big rooms and staff who were courteous and helpful! The breakfast buffet is of course meant for the Chinese traveller with an accommodation for the western customer. A vegetarian has a problem with food and the restaurant service is the hotels one big weakness! Quite clearly the focus of the hotel is to provide a bed and Breakfast experience that delights but little else. The pricing is a little high for such basic amenities. A great room experience but little else to be got!

"Potential not met"
My partner and myself chose this hotel due to previous recommendations and its lovely photographs. The hotel itself is in a reasonable location and the room we had was very nice. Unfortunately a few things let this trip down. 1) balcony. I paid extra for a balcony room thinking it would be lovely to sit and look at the scenery however we were unable to access it as the door was locked at a four inch gap. I understand safety is paramount but why advertise a balcony if we can't have one?! 2) peacocks. The hotel advertised wandering peacocks but we never saw them - we looked specifically several times. 3) being fined for a nosebleed. I had a nosebleed while sat on the bed one evening and got some (a drop) of blood on the sheet. We were charged 330RMB (£33)for the privilege. 4) location. There are construction works going on, on one side of the hotel. Its not too noisy but it does disturb that sense of this place being a "retreat" , and views from the room overlook this lovely construction site. Taxi drivers can find this place really difficult to find and the subway is a 15-20 minute walk away.

"Perfect Stay!"
I recently had a 5 night stay at the Donghu Guest house and would highly recommend it! It was super cheap (but not in a nasty way) and the rooms were very clean, well maintained and the air conditioning was very efficient during the summer heat. The hotel is conveniently located right next to Huaihai Road (brilliant for shopping), in between 2 Metro stations which makes getting around really easy. People's Park is only 2 stops away for 3RMB. Donghu Street itself, is packed with lots of little restaurants, bars and massage/beauty parlours and if you venture up to Changle Road you can find lots of cute little shops with a local feel. I really enjoyed my stay (and the area in general) and will definitely stay here again!

"Good value for money, just avoid the spa"
I stayed in this hotel during my trip to Shanghai for its annual marathon event. The hotel is located near the race expo as well as the finishing line so it would be easy for me after the race. The receptionist and the porter were very efficient, quickly checking my booking details and issuing me my room key card. The porter was very quick to help me with my luggage to my room. The porter showed me how to open the room using the key card and went on to show me all the light switches and checked that they are all working. The room was very well equipped. LG LCD TV with HBO and some local channels. Within the room they provide an table lamp at the writing desk, a travel power adaptor, alarm clock, sewing kit, pens, notepad, slippers, iron with ironing board, electric kettle, complimentary distilled water in bottles, shoe shine kit, ash tray (???), good quality paper bags. In the toilet, they provide razor, toothbrush with toothpaste, comb, handwash soap, shower gel in dispenser, hand towel, face towel and bath towel. There is also a hair dryer built in. The toilet seat has a Panasonic bidet built in and works without flaw. The bath tub is fitted with a tap and a shower, There is also an removable anti-slip mat provided for the bathtub and a floor mat to dry your feet after your shower. There are restaurants nearby which are opened during the regular hours. If you need to get a bite in the odd hours, you have to take a short walk to the nearby stadium.

"Historic Hotel"
The Astor House Hotel was a complete delight! After far too many hours on far too many planes and waiting around airports while they relocated my lost luggage, I was exhausted and frustrated by the time I arrived in Shanghai. All those negative feelings disappeared the moment I walked into the Astor House Hotel's historic lobby with it's dark wood paneling and glittering chandeliers. The room they gave me was spacious and well appointed, and the hotel was ideally situated just a hop skip and jump from the Bund. I'd go back to that hotel any day!
