After 11 kms of very very rough public unmetalled road you reach a rough track to the Retreat. It is wonderfully situated on the edge of a plateau giving it uninterrupted views of the whole of the central and north Drakensberg range. Stunning.
The grounds are extensive so you can stay home and hike for miles in completely unspoiled countryside. The Retreat has a swimming pool, billiard room and spacious lounges and communal areas. There are extensive lawns, free-roaming horses It is fabulous really.
We stayed for three nights, braving the road to do some daytime touring. Breakfasts were excellent. Dinners were freshly cooked and very good indeed. Staff were 100% helpful. There was a well-stocked trust bar. And wifi worked well in hotspot areas, not in your room.

We were disappointed with the main swimming pool was green in peak season, 26th December, the shop was insufficiently stocked (no bread, no frozen foods etc). Kids entertainment was good but staff not very enthusiastic. Villa's are great and clean - no bad comments on these
