This is one of the best hotels I've stayed in, and coming from someone who stays in many hotels... this accolade is well-deserved.
I only have one small complaint, and it's due to a technicality in communication with reception staff. I booked a room with twin beds, as I was travelling with my mother. When i checked in, the room allocated to us had one large bed. Turns out you can't just say 'twin beds'... according to the receptionist (Candie, I think) you have to specifically ask for the twin beds to be 'split' (all the 'double' beds have twin bed bases and can be split out). So if you want 2 beds, you can't just say 'give me twin beds' - you have to say 'split the twin beds out'. Ridiculous, i know. I was also informed by her that the reason they hadn't seen my 'special' request in the first place was because i added it to a comments section that they 'don't normally check'. There you have it.
Other than that issue (which was very quickly and efficiently sorted out by Brenda, the duty manager), I have to say that I really enjoyed my stay. The staff in this hotel are lovely and will go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your stay - their service is amazing. The room was fantastic, and the location is perfect. It's pricey, but it's worth every cent.

We read some excellent reviews before choosing Hitgeheim, and they were all justified! Archie has created a little piece of heaven in these 8 thatched-roof chalets, cozy lounge with fireplace, decks and restaurant. We loved everything about our chalet.....private deck overlooking the river valley, sitting room, comfy bed, open shower. The food was uniformly delicious and beautifully presented. What really makes Hitgeheim special though, is its staff. Everyone was wonderful, and we are especially grateful to Donald & Michael for taking such good care of us; to Peter for a fabulous and informative tour of Addo Elephant Park, and to Archie for arranging our tour days in CapeTown with his son, Martin (who is a chip off the old block!). Archie also arranged our game drives at Schotia and at Amakahla. If you are going anywhere near Port Elizabeth, this is THE place to stay!!

This lodge goes all the way in customer service. You leave your car at the office and from that point you worry about nothing. You are transported back to the lodge by your personal guide and are treated to a luxurious experience from start to finish. You have your own personal butler and guide who will be at your service throughout your stay. The accommodations are 5 star and overlooking the water hole below your private deck and plunge pool. Your chef will provide you with some great meals and is more than willing to prepare whatever you desire. Matthew was nice enough to prepare a Banoffy pie for us on the day of our departure. We stayed there for 3 days at the end our 18 day vacation in South Africa and was a great way to unwind and relax before traveling back to Washington. You will enjoy 2 game drives per day. We had Jason and were very happy with the expert care provided and all the information he shared with us on the drives. We had some great game drives and will remember the experiences for years to come. Jason was able to get us close enough for some great pictures. In closing it was a wonderful experience at the end of Bill and Sandy's excellant adventures in South Africa.

What a magical place to stay. First class accommodation and the staff couldn't be more helpful or friendly. This place certainly lives up to its reputation - everything we hoped for and more. The welcome, the beautiful "rooms" (they are much more than this!), the cleanliness and the game drives themselves. It was an unforgettable experience and one that we would encourage anyone to participate in.

Loved the facility and friendly staff. It is a very long gravel road drive to get there and we we told that check in did not begin before 2:00 so we arrived at about 3:30 already too late for the afternoon safari that left at 3:00, so they gave us credit for any of the additional actives they offered the next day, I.e. Cheetah walk, caves, spa. We availed ourselves of everything they had to offer. We had great morning and afternoon safaris with Rangers Rodwell and Jonathan who were both excellent at tracking the animals. We saw lions (and their kill), Cape Buffalo, elephants, rhino, cheetahs, ostrich, baboons, monkeys, every sort of antelope and wildebeest, and even saw a tortoise. The birds were abundant and beautiful. Driving into the park we came across about a dozen giraffes. The food, including afternoon tea at 2:00 was very well done.
