"Relaxing hotel in beautiful grounds and great food"
My husband and I left our kids with family and took a rare night away on our own. This hotel was perfect to escape to, really welcoming and helpful staff, a great room with superb views of the extensive grounds, lots of space and a super comfy sofa to lounge on. Nice feature fireplace and nice touches like fresh flowers and home made biscuits. My only (really minor) dislike was the bed was a bit soft for my taste, although not unacceptably soggy. Generously sized bathroom too which looked recently refurbished. We had a dinner, B&B deal with Expedia so ate in the restaurant. As the hotel only has 10 rooms this wasn't overly busy. Again the waiting staff were excellent and attentive without being overly intrusive and were knowledgeable about the menu. The food is excellent and deserves the awards it has won. The portions aren't massive but judged so that I felt quite content at the end of the meal. The breakfast was also extremely good! Would definitely go back if the opportunity arises.

"A rattling sort of time"
Food good, people pleasant, room comfortable but our room overlooked the main rail line, Oxford to London and high speed trains passed by every 10 to 15 minutes shaking the room and making lots of noise. This occurred all day and most of the night. With the windows tightly closed and ear plugs in place we survived. The location is well out of the way and is therefore a bit expensive.

"Pleasant hotel "
Friendly reception staff. Clean, large room but slightly dated, but silly things that were a bit annoying. Well stocked tea/coffee tray was on the window sill but the only accessible plug for the kettle was near the floor so ended up leaving the tray on the floor. The lights were too dim, even when on full - it just felt murky. The walls were ridiculously thin. We heard the people in the next room brushing their teeth and chatting about their plans for the day. The window frames were in really poor condition and didn't seem very secure. Good looking breakfast menu but sadly the food wasn't particularly well prepared. Cheap, thinnest bread I've ever seen and pretty ropey coffee. One morning I ordered poached egg on toast and the egg hadn't been drained after cooking and was plonked onto a piece of dry brown toast. Wet, wafer thin toast. Awful! Plus the hollandaise sauce on the eggs Benedict I had on another day actually had no flavour and again, the eggs weren't drained so made the muffin wet and soggy. I've never eaten anything that didn't taste of anything at all! The breakfast just seemed very cheaply made. And the plates were cold. I hate cold plates. However, the location is good, there's lots of free parking, the staff were lovely and it was in a pretty area. I would return but would probably avoid the food.

"Warm country pub atmosphere"
Had a sporting event in Abingdon and this hotel is well situated for the leisure centre (about 15 mins). Lovely log fire very welcoming. Family room - double and a single. Very comfortable beds. Room had kitchen extractor fan outside window making a noise. Was assured it goes off at 10 - and it did - so we had a good nights sleep. Friends met us for dinner and wished they had booked in here instead of in town. Lovely meal. 2 had the 3 course special at £10. Excellent value. Breakfast good too.

    Abingdon, Oxfordshire Hotel Guide

Abingdon is a quiet town on the banks of the Thames, and one of the oldest settlements in Britain. The town centre is dominated by the handsome former county hall which is now a museum, and the almshouses behind St. Helen's church are worth strolling around. Abingdon maintains the tradition of Morris Dancing, and every midsummer holds a traditional parade to elect a mock mayor.
