“Met my expectations”

Hotel claims that all water in the hotel is treated to be safe, but on a prior trip to Acapulco (I don't remember which hotel) I got very sick despite the claim, so I never drink water from the tap in Mexico. If you don't want to drink the tap water they have bottled water in the rooms, but they charge MX$17 for about half a litre. You can get good bottled water at a fair price at the OXXO store one block away at the Casa Blanca hotel. Apart from this annoyance the hotel is fine.

“Without a doubt I will Stay here again”

El Cano is a very well maintained hotel in the heart of the downtown district in Acapulco. We chose El Cano after looking at several hotels during past trips to Acapulco. For us this was the perfect Hotel. The size (160 rooms) keeps it small enough that the facilities are not overrun. You really don’t have to compete to get a nice spot around the pool or on the beach. The staff is both friendly and helpful. Due to the recent bad publicity Acapulco was way down in terms of tourists. Because of this we were able to upgrade to a penthouse suite very reasonably. The suite was beautiful townhouse style with a jaccuzzi on the second floor it has patio doors on both ends allowing the ocean breeze in all the time. The regular rooms are very nice however and would have served us well had the upgrade not been available. Avoid the rooms on the first floor as the palm trees block your view of the Bay. Many of the travelers were there on an all inclusive package that was not available on the web sites we checked. The food at the Hotel was what one would expect from an all inclusive. I would have liked to have had more meals at the hotel but the prices without being all inclusive were way to high for the quality of these amenities. I would have preferred either higher quality food and drink or lower prices. Being in the heart of downtown Acapulco one has so many choices for food and drink I actually prefer sampling other venues anyway.

Area recommendations
I love Acapulco. The weather in the winter is 85 degrees and sunny every day. It is much more authentic than other resort towns. This is a real Mexican city. While I’m sure much of the economy is dependant on tourism this city would still function without it. It draws many people from within Mexico. The recent bad publicity has hurt tourism. (It doesn’t seem to have affected the traffic however) As a result the authorities are making a substantial effort to keep the main areas crime free. The same things go on in this city as any other cities of similar size, no worse or better. You will be quite safe if you stick to the main areas of town and don’t wander off too far. I dropped my room key walking down the busy sidewalk along the costera and a local teenager came running up to return it to me. This is not the place to go if you like all inclusives and will never leave your resort. There are much nicer and better values on those types of vacations elsewhere. If you like great weather with no fear of a rainy day in the winter and like to get out and sample the local flavor of a place there is no better place on earth.

“I would go back!”

I was really happy with this hotel! The bed was typical firm for Mexico, but the room was spotless, had the most amazing veiw! ( we were on the 7th floor). Loved the fresh towels in the evening, makes total sense since you come up from the pool and/or beach in the evening and shower for the night. The location was nice and central, you could walk right out to the main strip and grab a cab or a costera bus (5 to 6 pesos depending on A/C or not) or even walk to anywhere ie. Walmart (for water bottles), starbucks, banks/ATMs, tons of great little cafes and restaurants. We did all 3. They had a super nice area on the beach roped off with chairs, palapas, and bar/restaurant service if you so desired. It was a little difficult to get a waiter on the beach the second day, not sure why. We made sure to go to the breakfast buffet one morning since the reviews I read said it was so good. And we were NOT disappointed. Everything was delicious, wonderful variety and great service. The constant selling on the beach can get annoying, wear sunglasses, some do even come through the roped area. The pool looked very nice although we just wanted to be on the beach. Based on previous reviews, I made sure to always turn my beach towels in. It was for a short trip, but we had a fantastic time!!

Area recommendations
I like the location because it was very centrally located.
Must see
The Quabrada divers were amazing!!! Loved it! Definitely take a taxi there and back from the Costera. We took a Costera bus for 5 pesos each to the end and then a taxi to the actual location. Stop by the Zocalo and check it out.
Dining
I would agree the "Tacos and Beer" in La Condesa, get the tacos al pastor. Yum! Yum! Yum! We had a lunch at a sidewalk cafe and a breakfast at another little sidewalk cafe, very good both times.
Nightlife
Palladium was a blast!! Slow start, but when the dancing opened up we danced till the early morning. Lots of entertainment all night - acrobats, entertainers, dancers, balloons and confetti, etc. You can get discount cards from both the taxi drivers and the booth in front of Planet Hollywood. Tuesdays are traditionally ladies night, but because it was spring break/ high season, there weren't any big discounts. But they do include your drinks excluding energy drinks and water.
Outdoors or beach
The weather was in the 80s, so definitely beautiful sunny temps! The beach is not powder sand, but I loved the beach, it was clean, the sand does heat up in the afternoon.

“It adequately served the purpose.”

It was my understanding that each room would have a fold out couch and that was not the case. We were told that roll-away beds were also not an option. Other than that, the service was friendly and the environment was clean and well kept. I might also mention that we ate at the hotel restaurant the first night and we were a bit shocked by the prices. For 6 of us our tab came to approx. $140. I had a bowl of soup that was over $6. The hotel entertainment was wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed the mariachis and the evening pianist.

“Very good food and service. The manager was not proffesional at all or accomodating.”

The water was backed up in the toilet and all sinks. The food service and preparation was very good. The beach vendors were a bit annoying, the hotel staff tried to regulate it. The location was excellent, close to all the nice restaurants. It was nice to go to the other hotels for brunch since we were not "all inclusive" for the money we paid we should of been all inclusive. The manager didn't care and was very rude. The room was small but comfortable with a great view of the ocean and mountians. It was nice that the housekeeping would come by around bedtime and ask if we would like anything. Ohhh.. I called for a sandwhich and stated that I would come down to pick it up since I wanted to go for a short walk. When I went down they said it is being delivered to you're room.... I was also billed for that. I even got back to the room before the food did. Overall this place sucked. It was slow so that was kind of nice... for it being so slow you think they would b a bit more accomodating toour needs. NOT at all. We visited a couple other upscale hotels and we will be staying there from now on... it costs the same!!!

“Old fashioned Acapulco with solid service”

Though not a perfect hotel (what hotel is?) the Elcano is still a good recommendation in Acapulco. Even the smallest rooms have ocean views, the food is good and sometimes quite good, room-service efficient, service attentive even at the busiest times. The hotel itself has a fun, retro feel, especially in the lobby. The prices, however, are a little steep.

“Not impressed”

The hotel is clean, the rooms are large, the staff is friendly. But: The sand on the beach consists of large grains, so it hurts to walk on barefoot. This is not your typical "sugar sand" beach. During our stay, the hotel leased its outdoor restaurant for a corporate party. Most hotels have a "quiet time" policy after 11pm, but this was not the case. We were on the 6th floor, and the music was so loud, we could hear EVERY SINGLE WORD from a DJ. At 12:30 am I was told that the party would end by 1am and at 1:30 am with the music still blaring I was told t that it should end by 2am. Needless to say that it continued well into the morning hours, and we got no rest.

Warning to astma sufferers: the beach (and the nearby hotels) is located in a harbor surrounded by mountains. And when the wind blows from the city, the air gets trapped in the harbor, the entire city is covered with haze and it is really hard to breathe. In Acapulco, most taxis are ancient Volkswagen cars (w/out AC) that emit a lot of pollution into the air. If you have astma, I would not recommend Acapulco as your travel destination. On the other hand, when the wind blows from the ocean, everything is fine.
Getting there
Getting to Acapulco by air from Mexico City is a nightmare. I have never seen anything that disorganized, although I traveled extensively to other countries. The airport only tells you the gate number of your flight 45 min before the departure time. There are electronic bulletin boards throughout the terminal as well as the info desk, but we quickly discovered that neither provides accurate information. 20min before our scheduled departure we still had no gate info. 10 min before departure - 2 gates for our flight were announced, on the opposite sides of the terminal. Most people on our flight were going on a cruise departing from Acapulco the next day, some of them -elderly and handicapped. 15 min AFTER our scheduled departure time the bulletin board still claimed that departure was on time, but the gate info disappeared. 30 min after scheduled departure time: our flight number disappeared from the bulletin board and was never displayed again. The next flight that was scheduled to fly to Acapulco an hour and a half after ours also disappears from the info board. 2 hours later, we noticed a sign on one of the gates: "acapulco flight boarding now", no flight number mentioned. We went there and got boarded - apparently the airport authorities combined the two "disappeared" flights together - no announcements of any kind to the effect.

“Charm of an era past”

I loved the hotel...comfortable, not pretentious, local charm that reflected another era. My only warning would be that since they don't have double paned windows, the noise at night from the partying on the beach can bring you to a point of sleep deprivation. If you want to join the parties or can sleep through anything, then it should not be a problem. The view from our balcony was spectacular. I would return.

“Excellent Location and Clean Beach”

I've been in Acapulco several times. I have friends that live there and I always stay in different places. Elcano was one of my pending spots and I could not be more satisfied. The room was clean and confortable, I had a nice ocean view(make sure to ask for the rooms at the end of the corridor, wont be dissapointed) and facilities were O.K. and well mantained. I think the best features of this place is its excellent location and clean beaches! I'm looking forward to going back soon!

“Elcano Acapulco - excellent value, great hotel”

My husband and I stayed at the Elcano Hotel during American Thanksgiving week. The timing was good because it is just prior to the high season, but with low season prices. Although the hotel is a few years old, it is very well maintained. All rooms are ocean/bay view and the standard room with king bed is very spacious with a large sitting area with a central round marbel table, two stuffed chairs and a small sofa. The balcony was large with comfortable teak chairs and table. Service was excellent. The restaraunt gives you the choice of buffet or ala carte. The ala carte menu was large and the food quality excellent. It included some really interesting dishes at a very fair price. Restaraunt service was prompt and attentive. Pool is good size with some interesting features like built-in jaccuzzis along one side and a "reflective tanning" area along the other side (essentially a wide area with a few inches of water designed to lay in. It's not a huge pool, but is the right size for the hotel. Plenty of lounge chairs. Many good places to eat within walking distance. Catch one of the many busses on the main drag for only 5 pesos and you can go anywhere (malls, old town, etc). On a very nice beach. For us, a very nice change from the huge all-inclusives... We would definitely return.
