From Alken, it's 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the northwest to Cologne and 55 miles (89 kilometers) to the east to Frankfurt.

World Conference Center Bonn, Sterntor and Beethoven Hall are other interesting attractions worth visiting for those who find themselves with time to spare.
If the weather forecast makes you want to head indoors, go to Rhineland-Palatinate's history museums, theaters and art museums. Rhineland-Palatinate is blessed with some beautiful cathedrals, guaranteed to move both atheists and the faithful.
If you are in the area during winter, try out some of the local wintersports such as skiing and snowboarding. Both of these are available in the region. There can be times when one of the better ways to see a place is by tapping into local knowledge. The region offers some interesting city walking tours, segway tours and winery tours.
