Spring Break 2015

Posted Mar 30, 2015
Pros: Near the canyons.
Cons: Appearance and cleanliness
Location: Canyons about 15 mins down the road; this was the highlight.
My family and I were on a 20 hour ride from Alabama to New Mexico; it was great. Texas was our second stop going. I decided to stay here versus Amarillo (several mile away) so that we could visit the canyons in Canyon, Tx. The gentleman at the desk (during check-in) was very nice and knowledgeable about the local goings on (restaurants, museums and the canyons). I noted that the interior of the lobby, eating area, and overall look was little shabby, outdated and needed to be cleaned. Anyway, dragging my family up to the 5th floor in a really tiny elevator was a challenge; when we got to our room the hotel room key didn't work. Before dragging back to the front desk, I station my kids outside the room door with instructions not to move and to keep an eye on each other and the luggage. Back at the desk, the clerk explains/apologies, that the room is occupied. OMG, the lady (room occupant) had to be terrified... not only were we desperately trying to get in the room, but there were some people standing outside her door (I could visualize a Texas Ranger dragging my kids off to jail). Upon entering the room, we were immediately disappointed again by the shabbiness, stained carpet, lack of towels, and just the overall feeling of creepiness of the room. I had to take a sleep-aid (family dollar across the street) just to make it through the night. It was okay, but not for me...even if everything is old, at least be clean!

Clean quiet hotel close to Palo Duro Canyon

Posted Dec 31, 2014
Pros: Quite, swimming room, pancakes in the morning
Cons: Fix hot tub?
Location: Canyon is the closest town to Palo Duro Canyon. Next to the big city Amarillo.
We stayed in Holiday Inn Express for a night because next morning went to Palo Duro Canyon. Only 15 minutes drive from the hotel. Room is decent. The only minus - the sink is inside the bathroom, which is not optimal with 4 people in the room (two adults and 2 kids). The inside swimming pool was good - spacy and warm, but hot tub was broken. Working hot tub would be nice in that time of the year. Breakfast is 6am to 9am, almost overslept, as arrived late the night before. But pancake printer was a bonus! Beds are comfortable, room is quite, TV works. There is a small fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and iron& board - all what you really need in a room, plus table, couple chairs. The room is not that big. But again - enough space to spend a night.
