Lovely hotel convenient to all facilities

Posted Sep 16, 2014
Pros: Convenient, spacious and the art deco bar
Cons: The restaurant menu. A good menu is when you cannot choose what to eat because there is at least more than two items making you salivate.
We had a wonderful time exploring Amsterdam, its museums, theatre and canals. Loved the trams and the friendliness of people. Hotel staff very helpful and pleasant. Shopping and exploring was also great and its easy to get around. Express bus 197 from airport door to door! We will definitely go again.

Great Location

Posted Sep 14, 2014
Pros: It's convenient location
Cons: I would like the idea of breakfast being included
Location: Canals, museums, shops and restaurants all within walking distance. There is a particularly good Indonesian restaurant - try their Riis tafel menu
Pleasant hotel, conveniently situated for shops, restaurants, canals, museums and public transport. We walked everywhere except for taking the bus back to the airport - which was relatively cheap and efficient. The friendly hotel staff advised us of bus numbers and times.

Great location

Posted Sep 8, 2014
Pros: location
Cons: carpet needs to be removed from the rooms and better towels
Location: Restaurants and museums
We liked the location, the staff was very friendly, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was a bit small with poor quality towels. The rug in the room looked gross. It needs to be removed, it looked like it had been there a few decades and I wondered about the germs and grime. It was pretty noisy outside on Friday night, the kids stayed up and partied on the street until 5AM. The breakfast buffet at the restaurant was nice with a good selection of items. Across the street is a canal cruise station which was very convenient. Good restaurants in the neighborhood. Loved ,loved The Blue Pepper, Indonesian food at it's best

Art Deco lovely

Pros: Location, room size, staff, cleanlieness- everything. A wonderful dining room- pricey, but excellent food and service.
Location: Close to trams, pedestrian streets, shopping, restaurants, bars......
'Lovely Art Deco Period hotel- staff extremely helpful and friendly. 'Rooms (K, at least) spacious and gracious. On a busy square, but quieter on canal side.

Hard to Beat

Posted Sep 3, 2014
Pros: The location is terrific. Located on a canal, close to the museum campus yet just steps from nightlife and shopping, there is something for everyone.
Cons: Wi-fi access, while free, was definitely spotty.
Location: Close to the museum campus, dining - the Cafe Americain is part of the hotel and worth a visit, canal tours, bike rental, shopping.
As a first time visitor to Amsterdam I chose this hotel primarily for it's location. Unknown to me was the history of the Amsterdam American. There is an air of faded elegance to the place, historic reminders of what it was. My overall experience was positive. There were inconsistencies, however, as to the helpfulness of the staff, some more accommodating than others, most interactions being somewhat perfunctory.

Good hotel close to Museums & restaurant district

Posted Sep 1, 2014
Pros: Hotel had an excellent restaurant, and if not raining could sit out in the square nearthe fountain.
Cons: A smile from the staff would go a long way, and not passing the buck when needing assistance.
Location: Museum district only 1 tramstop away - Rikjsmuseum and Van Gogh museums a must.
Reasonable hotel with good spacious rooms (for Europe). Location excellent, close to restaurants and museums. Tramstop close by. Downside was room was on streetside, and very noisy at night (as close to nightlife etc).

Great location in Amsterdam

Posted Aug 29, 2014
Pros: Great location, you can walk to just about any attraction.
Cons: Hotel is old and some of the rooms are small. The trams run right next to the hotel so if you want a quieter room, ask for a inward facing view.
Hotel is only one block from the famous Leidesplein and also close to the museums. The bus stop to/from the airport is right across from the hotel, which is very convenient.

Good situation. Rooms variable

Posted Aug 21, 2014
Pros: Situation, cafe American worth a look
Cons: Some areas shabby
Location: Short walk to rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum. Tram stop very close. Good selection of restaurants and bars
Stayed for 4 nights with teenage children. Had booked one double and 1 twin room, both deluxe. Double room was good although bathroom rather compact. Other room was also a double with larger bathroom. Glass door to tiny balcony (window box size) but door handle fell off when turned! Also bedside shelf fell off wall when touched. Staff at reception very polite and though unable to change room first night for a twin did offer extra bed. The twin room we were given subsequently was huge and lovely. Overall a positive experience but it does depend which room you get.

Brilliantly situated hotel

Posted Aug 19, 2014
Lovely room overlooking the canel. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. Such good access to all the sights and so easy to get to from the airport by the 197 bus which stops right outside the hotel. The only irritation was the very poor lighting in the wardrobe area.
