“Convenience and home-like ambience”
The Grand is a converted apartment building on the edge of the Anchorage business district. The "room" actually consists of a bedroom, bath, living room and kitchenette. It is an older building, but has been well-renovated. It is in easy walking distance from most downtown businesses and offices. The Alaska Railroad terminal is just down the hill, and some people object to the train sounds, but others enjoy them. The only comfort and convenience drawbacks are that the lobby is down a couple of steps with no obvious access for people with mobility issues. Like most hotels in the far north, the Grand is overheated in the winter. If you are used to cooler inside spaces, you will need to turn the heat down a bit.
“Had a wonderful stay!”
Everything was quite splendid. The entire place was clean and well maintained. The bed was super comfy and very plush. The staff was very nice and helpful, and they even baked cookies for us! The location was perfect, being within walking distance of the mall and various bars. They offer a free continental breakfast too! Overall had a great time for a great price!
“Overall, very nice”
Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Room was older, but updated and clean. Only complaint was the freight train running behind the hotel that blew it's whistle several times during the night.
“Very Impressed”
All I got to say is: well recommended... the only thing they've got to change is the breakfast...
“Enjoyed our stay”
Stayed for 2 Nights during Labor day weekend. Room was really comfortable. Carpet in the corridor was bit old and smelly. But otherwise hotel was very good. People in front desk were very helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a cheap and good place for accomodation.
“Too close to the train station”
The hotel and room itself completely met our expectations. We were comfortable and thought the location was fine until the train came into the station at 4:30am and blew the whistle several times. While some guests may need to get up early to catch the train for other destinations, we did not and therefore left for our drive to Seward very tired. Only because of the train noise would we not stay here again. In every other way, the Anchorage Grand Hotel provided comfortable accommodations.
“Convenient to downtown Anchorage, great inside - close to train station (noise)”
Had a great week at the hotel, the suite style room with full kitchen (microwave, stove, refrigerator, dishes, dishwasher) was excellent for our type of trips trying to keep half of the meals done at "home". The hotel is right at the perimeter of downtown Anchorage, parking is free (at a pay parking lot but a pass is given daily for the lot by the hotel) which makes visiting downtown sites very easy, many within walking distance. The rooms were clean and furnished comfortably. One word of caution, if you are sensitive to noise this may not be the spot for you. Our room faced out directly towards the Alaska Railroad Depot and there are trains coming and going quite often, the horns were a familiar sound. It wasn't an issue in the middle of the night, but it was still noisy around 11:30pm. I don't mind train noise, but if you're wanting early nights it could be a problem. Otherwise I would fully recommend the hotel.
“Excellent hotel for the money!”
The hotel is in a excellent location. It is close to shops and places to eat. It has kitchenets so you can cook your own food to save money if you wish too. It has two TV's, one in the room and one in the living room.
“Centrally Located”
This is an excellent suite, situated in a great location. Walking distance to all the main attractions in Anchorage CBD. Perfectly suited to a family of 3 with a bit more space that a regular hotel room, plus the convenience of a kitchen. Noise from the adjacent train station may cause concern for some, however you can close the windows if it bothers you that much. It only rates as a 2.5 star, but I guess this is because it doesn't have an attached restaurant, but with so many great eating places within walking distance, who cares. This place should rate at 4 star based on the quality of the suite.
“Nice place”
We were very impressed with the room -- lots of closet space and very generous sizes of rooms. The kitchen was well supplied (coffee mugs, glasses, ice in freezer). Location: great -- we love to walk around and this place is very well situated for that. Weekend arts and crafts market right across the street. Train station and many nice restaurants within walking distance. Apples available for guests in reception area. They offered to watch our bags after we checked out, while we did a final day of touring. Downside: noise -- train whistles and loud trucks all night long. If you go in the summer and want some good sleep, use ear plugs. Also: hotel did not have a way to relay to us an important message they received for us while we were staying there. We sent them an email about this problem.
