The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11-mile paved path along Cook Inlet, draws walkers, runners, bicyclists, and even moose—the latter generally found toward trail's end. In winter, the trail is lighted and groomed for cross-country skiing. The closest trail access is about a mile from the hotel. Bike rentals are available downtown. Flat Top Mountain, about 11 miles from downtown, is a more strenuous hiking trail. Views from the summit encompass the city, the Chugach Mountains, and Cook Inlet.
Outfitters in Anchorage offer fly-in fishing adventures to the backcountry. The Alyeska Resort, about 40 miles from downtown, has 1,000 acres of deep, pristine snow for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Other winter pastimes near the city include dog sledding, ice skating, and snowmobile tours.
