"A Quiet, Friendly Home Base..."
We arrived fresh from our wedding in Old San Juan, happy to have secured a reasonably priced accommodation in high tourist season but not knowing what to expect from Vieques or from Great Escape. As it turned out, both exceeded our expectations. Vieques itself combines a variety of incredible beaches (from small private enclaves to a cool public expanse) and two towns that are fairly typical tourist traps (beers & souvenirs!), except for the charm of being small scale and totally mom & pop, as opposed to corporate (i.e. no chain stores). There are several wonderful restaurants on the island, some in town (loved Bili) and a couple of the best on the outskirts (Noche/Tin Box stands out). So, too, with the hotels/inns, featuring a few in-town, a few on the outskirts and several dotting the countryside--one of which is Great Escape.
The Inn is a five to ten minute drive from either town, tucked away in its own quiet corner on a beautiful, eclectically decorated fenced property. The owner, Dana (pronounced "Donna"), lives in a house beside the building that contains the guest rooms, in addition to a full apartment that's also available for rental. We found the rooms themselves to be comfortable and clean but unassuming--quiet, safe places to sleep and wash, which is all we wanted. We loved the setting overall, with its common area, featuring daily breakfast, honor bar and swimming pool, where one could usually find Dana or meet other guests. All in all, a perfect home base!
