Perfect for usPosted Nov 2, 2013
The bed was extremely comfortable. The staff were really friendly. I was woken up too early by cleaning staff in the lobby near my room one morning but all noise stopped as soon as I politely told them I couldn't sleep. I felt really comfortable there and it was right next to the beach which made for a beautiful morning walk. Also check out Pixi Deli around the corner!

Great for Family!Posted Oct 22, 2013
Pros: Close to Santa Cruz, handled our family well, served breakfast, had heated pool/spa, walking distance to beach
Cons: bathroom was small
Location: Santa Cruz boardwalk 10 min away, walking distance to the beach
We loved it! We have 4 kids and we had room for all of us. The pool / spa area was great. The breakfast was so convenient. We walked to the beach and played. We drove to Santa Cruz board walk in 10 min. We plan to stay there regularly.

Not much curb appeal but it served us well.Posted Sep 19, 2013
Pros: Parking right outside the door. And it is what it is -- a simple two-story motel. But it might be noisier on a weekend, or when children are present.
Cons: Our room, a 'junior suite', was stuffy at first and I feared a night of eau de old motel. But we opened the sliding door and it aired out quickly.
Location: C'mon, it's 100 steps to the ocean and a short drive to the Redwoods. Monterrey to the south, Santa Cruz to the north. There's tons to do.
I've never written an Expedia review, but the Rio Sands deserves one for its unpretentious comfort. We were very tired after a stressful week and a long flight. We didn't want bells and whistles, we just wanted a simple quiet room. And that's what we got. It's tucked away in a residential neighborhood of Aptos, about a block from the beach and some little beachfront restaurants. This isn't a 5 star resort, so if you're looking for a glamorous celebrity-filled spa, forget it. But the desk staff was good humored and pleasant, we were checked in quickly, the room was clean and quiet and the beds comfy. The breakfast room was large enough that we weren't sitting on top of other guests. In fact I sat by the fireplace which felt good in the foggy morning, and there was a pretty good selection of things to eat, from waffles to hard boiled eggs, cereal, lots of whole grain bread for toast, yogurt, etc. (okay, also some canned peaches. Like I said, it's not pretentious.) There's a pool and a pleasant enough little interior courtyard, so you could sit outside and read if so inclined, but it's in such a great area why would you? The sliding doors open onto a long walkway to the pool area, so privacy is a bit of a factor, but I think it's just hotel guests who can access the walkway, and only a few people walked by. We opened the other windows so we could lock the sliding door at night and still have a breeze. I'm told it's a safe neighborhood, and it felt that way.

Only 200 or so yards and you are on the beach. Family friendly. Great place to stay.

A Quiet and Rare GemPosted Aug 28, 2013 on Hotels.com
My husband and I loved this hotel. We made last minute reservations and were unsure but when we drove up to the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised. The front desk person was extremely gracious and helpful. When we got to our room it was a bit dated but extremely clean. I walked to the balcony and could see the beach, I was delighted at the thought of sipping a my cup of coffee or a glass of wine while sitting on the balcony. The breakfast buffet had very fresh pastries and a nice selection of other items. We spent time in the sparkling clean pool. When room service came by as we were leaving, I told them they didn't need to make up bed but please bring more coffee packets. The housekeepers went above and beyond and cleaned the room and left several packages for coffee. My only critic is that there was no air conditioning though there was an over-head fan and additional small fan. The room was comfortable in the evening though a bit warm in the late afternoon. I would definitely stay here again if I were in the area.

This is just a block from the ocean. Although the rooms don't enjoy an ocean view, the grounds are lovely and the pool and spa area are very welcoming. There is a good paved beach path that is about a mile long and we enjoyed walking it before breakfast each morning. The Cafe Rio restaurant is very close and has an extensive menu. This was a very relaxing stay.

Two Short Blocks from Rio Del Mar BeachPosted Aug 27, 2013 on Hotels.com
My wife and I selected this hotel for it's proximity to a professional forestry conference north of Davenport on CA Hwy 1 because the rates were reasonable for the location and easier to access than lodging in Santa Cruz. We were pleasantly welcomed at the office and efficiently registered, given our room key and a parking pass and advised of the hours of the free continental breakfast. The next morning, at 6:30am I found everything ready for guests and a much more extensive breakfast menu selection than I'd expected, allowing my wife and I to enjoy a different mix the two mornings we were there. Sunday morning I discovered we were only a mile south of the WWI concrete ship at the end of the pier at Seabright State Beach, which I'd first seen on a camping trip with the Boy Scouts in the early 1950's. There is a continuous beach in both directions for several miles to walk on. Access from to the hotel from the freeway is simple if you have GPS in your vehicle or Google directions from your starting point. We enjoyed a good Mexican dinner at Manuel's on Center Street, about a mile from Rio Sands, but it's popular, so make reservations to minimize waiting for a table. When one group of hotel guests returned around 11:30pm Saturday night talking and laughing loudly, hotel staff quickly quieted them down, and there were no further disturbances. We will definitely stay here on our next Santa Cruz Co,. trip.
