“One of the best places to stay when visiting Arenal Volcano”
Magnificent service, fantastic view of the Arenal volcano. I was very impressed by this hotel. Probably onw of the best customer service that I have ever received. I stayed in one of the bungalows and, although it was not super comfortable, it was great to accomodate the large family group I was travelling with. It has probably the best hotel breakfast service I've ever had. Highly reccomend it to everyone travelling to the Arenal Volcano park.
“ROOMS WITH VIEWS”
This hotel is designed to ensure every guest has a view of the ARENAL VOLCANO. The basic set-up is that each room is a separate structure, cabin, set at an angle so that one end wall faces the volcano; this end is all glass ( with curtains). You can watch the volcano from your airconditioned room or from the small patio; everyone has a view. [ Unfortunately, the one night we were there, Arenal chose not to show off.] Decent restaurant & bar, nice pool and other restaurants nearby. Beautifully landscaped. Adequate furniture.
“Our stay at Lavas Tacotal”
We loved the view of the volcano and the grounds had beautiful plants. Rooms were basic but beds were very hard but as we stayed at other hotels in Costa Rico we did not find a soft bed. Staff was very friendly!
“Adequate, but not wonderful”
Hotel is fine for the price and the location is good for the activities in the area. However the lack of a hot tub made for less enjoyable evenings. The lower pool was heated, but just barely. Overall I would say the hotel was adequate and better than many places in Costa Rica, but don't go here expecting the treatment or facilities of the higher priced, more luxurious hotels / spas in the area. I would stay in other locations on my next visit
“Funky but OK”
Funky but pleasant. Rooms are spartan, location is good. Lighting is bad!
“Not a comfortable stay”
The property looks nice from outside but it is very poorly managed and room maintenance was terrible. The rooms don't have the basic amenities like lockers, coffee makers, creams and shampoos. We stayed in one of the cabanas. There were this crawly bugs in the corners and one on our pillow. Apparently they climb to the ceiling and fall on the bed. Also, the bathroom was flooded from some leakage during the night so we got changed to another room and it had the same problems bugs and leakages. The shower doesn't work well. The hot water comes and goes. My daughter almost froze while taking a shower there since the hot water stopped after 2mins. The rooms were not cleaned and towels not changed for us. We booked this hotel although it did have bad reviews from other people because we could not find a room in the better reviewed hotels for the dates we were traveling. The pool issuper cold although it has beautiful views of the mountain. Couple of good things are the beautifuls tropical flowers surrounding the property and the views. We also liked the breakfast in the mornings.
“ok hotel at the foot of volcano”
We staryed 5 nights at this hotel as there was no vacancy with other hotels. This hotel definitely has one of the most beautiful views of the volcano, no doubt. However, the hotel staff is quite lazy. The first night our room had earthworms on floor in bathroom and there was no soap! The next day the room was not cleaned. Fortunately, we met the owner of the hotel, Fernando, who asked his staff to clean it up and gave us free drinks for the trouble. My other complaints are the quality of mattress (squeaky), un-harmful flies/ants in the room (they were nuisance), not helpful staff (they are not bad, just very lazy). The hotel is 10 kms from the downtown la fortuna. It was not an issue with us as we had car, but it could be an issue with others. I wish the hotel had good breakfast options. We went out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If the Hotel management improves the service and some amenities, this could be a good hotel to stay.
“I'd pass on this one”
The internet is hardly usuable and the beds are like sleeping on rocks, but so are most beds in Costa Rica hotels. We really never got functional internet and since we depend on it to run the business, that was a blow. We chose the hotel to be close to Tabacon and it is close, but we had to go back into town for good coffee and internet at the Rain Forest Cafe, so we gained nothing in being close to Tabacon. We changed rooms three times to find a working safety deposit box and since they push you not to leave anything in your car in Costa Rica, we needed a functioning safety deposit box. The staff was really nice but you can't do much if the facility is mediocre. We wouldn't have minded any of this if it was a cheap hotel, but at the price we paid, I expect more, but perhaps I shouldn't. Costa Rica prices are on par with the US for much less quality overall, a real disappointment in general.
“Not for adults”
I read the other reviews and figured that the worst hotel in paradise couldn't be bad. I was very wrong. They first tried to convince us that throwing a bed in the gym and pushing the equipment aside was an acceptable room. They were overbooked and it smelled like a gym. We got a better room, but still the AC was broken, and the balcony overlooked a courtyard FULL of teenagers screaming and yelling. It seems to be a stopover for a lot of school trips. I had a massage from a woman who clearly had no idea what she was doing, and it reflected perfectly on the quality of the hotel. For an extra $20 I could have stayed at a hotel up the street that was amazing. Don't waste your money on this place unless you are with a bus load of teenagers.
