Arenal area hotelsPosted Jan 15, 2014
Pros: Views, breakfast, peaceful, affordable
Cons: furnishings need to be upgraded, its incredibly dark at night...you need a flashlight to get to and from your room at night, wi/fi coverage
Location: its about 5 miles outside of La Fortuna. There are many popular hot springs within a few miles. Hanging Bridges (canopy tours) is ~10 miles away.
Montana de Fuego was a pleasant surprise for a cheap stay near the volcano. We liked the individual cabins, the lush grounds, peacefulness, fantastic views, and a great breakfast is included. wi/fi is very spotty and you don't get it in your rooms. Furnishings are dated but the AC worked well and our king bed was comfortable. Other family members next door said their beds were not comfortable. The staff was nice and the restaurant was pretty good. Remember to look at the bill before you tip...its included in most restaurants in CR. The pools were nice, the heated spring pools felt great...you could even mud yourself down with warm volcanic mud, or spend a few bucks and have them do it for you in their spa. Town of La Fortuna is about 5 miles away. Their shuttle costs $15 (US) for a round trip. Taxis run about $10 each way including tip. Concierage can set you up with an assortment of local activities. This is not the RITZ, if you cant handle some ants or analog TV or noisy little fridges there is a $700 per night hotel up the road.

Tons of monkeys on the trail behind the spa!Posted Dec 9, 2013
I have stayed at this hotel all 3 times I have come to the Arenal area. Nice views, beautiful grounds, peaceful hot pools surrounded by plants. They have warm volcanic mud you can apply to skin for free by the hot pools. Food is good. Close to town where I highly recommend the Argentine steak and ceviche at "Nenes" restaurant. The kids loved the frogs and lizards (if you look for them you will find them and if you don't you won't know they are there). The highlight was seeing 3 or 4 dozen brown spider monkeys on the trail behind the spa. It was a highlight of the trip. Ask around town for adventure tours for the best prices and options but the hotel has some onsite that are good too. We highly recommend Baldi hot springs a few miles toward town. Get your thickest in town for a discount.

Great hotel.Posted Oct 23, 2013 on Hotels.com
My fiancé and I spent a couple of days at this place. The bungalow we got was huge and confi, with a jacuzzi, kitchenette, a living Room and even a patio with a volcano view. The pools were nice. Diego, the bartender at the pool bar was really nice and friendly and made some killer cocktails. Good breakfast buffet and the girl at the front desk was really nice and friendly as well. Overall a good experience.

Tired hotelPosted Sep 2, 2013
Cons: Room renovation and cleanliness.
Location: La Fortuna offers great vacation opportunities.
The hotel is in a great location but it's tired. Roomas need renovation and to improve cleanliness. Good deal if it was 50 per night. SPA facilities are better than the rooms and pool.

If I had it to do again, I would stay elsewhere.Posted Aug 14, 2013 on Hotels.com
The location of this property is great...close to everything you would want to do in Arenal. We also liked the included breakfast in the attached restaurant and the bar they have there. But while the staff was friendly and tried to help us, there were several issues with our stay. The property reminded me of summer camp, and the room we stayed in looked nothing like the photos on the website. Still, we thought it could be cozy and were willing to do without luxuries. But while we were there our toilet broke and no one came to fix it, even after we called and spoke to the front desk. When the maids cleaned our room, they did not stock it with any towels (they took the used towels, and did not replace them). When I went to ask for towels in reception, they asked me to put down a deposit for them. I tried to explain that we had NO towels, not that we needed additional towels. Overall the condition of the hotel was just too shabby and we would have preferred to spend a few more dollars and stay somewhere more comfortable.
