“Good hotel but over-priced”
We went to the Lodge in the Green season (when it rains every day, sometimes all day). Not surprisingly, there were very few other guests, only two on one night.
This was the time the hotel had decided to use for redecoration (hammering) and repairs (jacuzzi out of action). It was unfortunate that they had not specified this before we booked or made some reduction in the costs. We complained and the absoulutely charming and helpful staff fell over themselves to compensate. They provided us, now the only two guests, with a candlelit dinner in the garden lit by flares as compensation. They could not have done more.
The hotel itself is 'alpine'; i.e. lots of wood panelling. This makes the bedrooms very dark although they have bijoux balconies overlooking the forest (we were visited by white faced monkeys as we drank our tea). The restaurant and bar area has similarly luscious forest views and would be a great place to sit and chill out (when the decorators have gone).
The meals we ate were exceptional and well worth the price.
We reckon that the charges are 20% to 30% higher than neighbouring hotels and considerably more than the Arenal Observatory Lodge, our previous stop and a hotel of similar quality.
However, it is an excellent hotel, in a good position with a friendly, helpful and efficient staff.
