This famous place of pilgrimage is the burial site of St Francis, one of the best loved of all Catholic saints. The ambitious basilica built soon after his death and decorated with superb frescoes by Giotto, Lorenzetti, and Martini has been fully restored after a devastating earthquake in 1997. St Clare, Franciss follower and companion, is buried in a separate church bearing her name.
