“great value/we would stay there again!”

auckland city hotel on hobson was convenient to downtown and many restaurants. clean rooms, great value and plenty of space for a downtown location. we were initially disappointed when hearing the internet was not free, but found the $10/hr worked for us. auckland was built on hills...so keep this in mind when planning your hike to and from transportation hubs. the neighborhood seemed pretty safe...the only issue was our catching the "airbus" to the auckland airport 4 am sunday morning. queen street was full of inebriated party animals, litter and a bit dicey. we did not encounter that when catching the "airbus" 2 weeks earlier 4 am on a tuesday. i would recommend airport shuttle service from your hotel for early sat or sunday am transportation.

“Perfect hotel for solo traveler”

I was very pleased with Auckland City Hotel. The room was very clean and inviting and the staff is excellent. It was my first time in New Zealand and they were very helpful to direct me to some neat little shops and restaurants. When I was trying to get to the city of Hamilton, the staff was extremely helpful in finding the best mode of transportation for me and even booking passage on a bus. The area itself seems a bit dodgy at first, but there were times when I was walking back to the hotel well past midnight and at no point did I not feel safe. If you have 5 star taste then perhaps look elsewhere, but if you just need a clean, comfortable place to stay, I highly suggest this hotel. I plan on returning to Auckland within a year and I will gladly stay here again.

“Disappointed”

The Auckland City Hotel in Hobson Street is in a slightly gritty part of town. There is nothing in the immediate area of interest, aside from the Sky City complex, which is not very interesting unless you like the casino lifestyle. The photos I saw of the hotel turned out to be a bit misleading. It was smaller and it was a no frills kind of place. Certainly not a four-star in my opinion. The bathroom was tiny. No space to put out your toiletries. Not even a shelf. Just the loo, a shower and a sink. Very small. The restaurant lacked any atmosphere although the food was OK. I would not stay here again. Other areas of Auckland (Parnell, Devonport) are much nicer.

Area recommendations

I would recommend Parnell, Devonport, Ponsonby. The areas have character such as interesting shops, cafes and nice colourful buildings. Hobson Street was just grey and boring and not pleasant at all.

Shopping is low quality in Auckland. Do not go here for the shopping.

“Great value hotel on a great downtown location”

Auckland City Hotel is a no thrill, great value hotel, with an excellent location. On block from sky city, and 4 or 5 blocks to the viaduct and warf. Front desk people were very helpful and arrange cheap transportation for me. The room was clean with no central A/C, an electric radiator and a fan where good enough to control the temperature of the room to my liking (it was winter when I was there). The room had 2 double beeds and a kitchenet with a microwave that allows you to cut some expensive dinning out if you like. I defenitely recommended.

“Excellent Auckland Location”

The Auckland City Hotel offered a central location to the CBD and Auckland Harbour attractions. It is located near the SkyTower and casino. We chose this hotel because of its proximity to the train station, having arrived on the TransScenic Overlander from Wellington and National Park stays. The room was somewhat small, but included everything my wife and I could need. Very clean and well kept environment. Outside noise was not a problem. Staff was helpful and went out of their way to accommodate our luggage storage as we had a late flight out of AKL.

Area recommendations

Interesting areas nearby included Auckland Harbour (many eateries, boating attractions, ferry to Wieheke, and close to shopping.
