“Staying The Night OUT of SEASON in Wall SD”

the hotel has changed hands a few times in the past 5 years, and is currently an America's Best Value Inn affiliate. the structure is from the late 1960s to mid 1970s, and is in three blocks of rooms two are run end to end, and the third intersects to an L shape. the first block of rooms, with the front desk, has been remodeled recently, the third [L leg] had not as of last year, middle block is unknown. the pool is small and dated, but functional, and the breakfast area is fairly good sized and recently remodeled. rooms are a mix of double queens, and single queen beds, some with fridge and microwave, some not [per remodel]. parking is all out side, none covered. highway noise is moderate in the L leg of rooms, minimal on the front block of rooms from I 90. hotel gives easy and quick access to restaurants and tourist activities, gas stations, and interstate access. amenities also include wifi, cable tv [with about 40 channels], and breakfast and pool [as mentioned]. i feel completely comfortable at this hotel, and would stay again. it is not a luxury stay, but comfortable, and affordable, and plan on staying again in the future. my mid score for hotel service dealt with how an issue with expedia was handled. ultimately it was resolved favorable for everyone, and the hotel was as accommodating as they would allow, but were reluctant to give me the solution that was ultimately given. otherwise i rank this a 3.5 to 4 out of 5 as an overall score.

Area recommendations

The wall sd area only has two hotel areas, a series of cabins on the south side of I90, and the two streets that lead down to wall drug in town. this hotel is one of the first you come to in wall. its easy to get to, reasonable rate, and close proximity to everything [wall drug is about 6 to 8 blocks to walk, everything else is closer than it, and the wounded knee museum is next door to this hotel.] the town is fantastic to stay in outside of the tourist season. everything is quiet, people are friendly, there are no lines, no waits, and prices are extremely reasonable in the late fall time frame. tempereature can be fickle, so plan accordingly.

Getting there

there are 3 ways to arrive in Wall. a- via I90 b- southern [route 44 iirc] up from badlands park area c- from the east neighboring towns by highway if you arent familiar with driving in south dakota [esp outside of rapid city, pierre, and sioux falls], wall is a typical town. with less than 1,000 people, dont expect amenities like walmart and target or strip malls. cell phone service has improved in the last year; but Verizon is the best choice [ATT upgraded CONSIDERABLY in the past 12 months with 3g service!!!]. shopping will be largely confined to small front stores aimed at tourists, large tourist entities [like wall drug], and small facilities aimed at town people [no chain grocery stores or the like]. medical facilities are also sparse in the state, largely in the 3 large cities [rapid city, pierre, sioux falls, plus mitchell] so plan accordingly as well if medical requirements are necessary. travel is done by car, as there are not many major airports, and no commuter rail service. in the summer months bus service is routed through the interstate, but does not stop at wall as far as i know. so expect considerable driving time. the views on the western part of the state [from wall west] can be stunning. but getting to wall from the east or north east part of the state is pretty slow and dull for children. traffic is generally light on the interstates [70mph limits], and be dominated by semi trailers. summer parking and traffic can be bad at peak times.

Family-friendly activities

wall sd has some of the most notable family activities in the area, wall drug and the badlands national park. both of which are great for kids, and hold things to see for adults as well. there are plenty of shopping locations around wall drug, but other than that the town offers very little. wall is a typical small south dakota town, that booms for the summer tourist season. coming out of season, you see just how small a community it really is. everyone is friendly and seems to be quite accommodating in the off season, and if you try hard not to be an obvious tourist, you are honestly treated like a town member. other family activities take place in the black hills area to the north west [spearfish, deadwood, lead are about 25 minutes north west of Rapid City. RC is about an hour west], and places along the way on I 90 [1880 town, reptile garden are both east of Wall about 1 to 2 hours]. wall drug is the biggest attraction other than the national park, and a trip to wall drug for the first time family could fill and afternoon. plan on spending about 5 to 6 hours to see most of the park, and remember to fill up with gas before leaving Wall proper. there are NO gas stations nearer to the park than in wall, none in the park, and none in Scenic or Interior SD [towns along park border]. plan accordingly !

“A night in Wall after a 108 degree motorcycle ride.”

It was clean and comfortable and fine for the price. It was a very hot day and was looking forward to jumping in their outdoor pool but there was too much stuff floating around. I probably could have had someone clean it out but didn't. The location makes it very walkable to the famous Wall Drug.
