“Great Setting, Lots of Stairs, Exotic Experience”
Staff unfailingly polite and friendly; setting spectacular. Room clean but rustic, both in terms of fitout and security (plumbing was ok, security was a concern for an isolated unit at the bottom of the ravine). Insects, geckos, frogs, and the like are part of the environment and the charm of places like Bali, and most these creatures are harmless. However, so close to the jungle it would be unrealistic to not have these "guests" joining you in or about your room. Apparently the hotel dates from the late 20's, and it does show a bit. That said, what an amazing idea to carve a hotel into the side of a ravine and connect it all with an intricate lattice of stairs; 6 or 7 flights if you were on the lowest level. Worth it, but somedays a bit of test in the heat. The cave spa is even worth visiting if only to look. Breakfasts admiring the sunrise over the jungle were tasty. Fairly easy walk to Ubud, yet the hotel has a nice isolated ambiance. Stay as far down the hillside as you can accept in terms of stairs and the noise of the motorcycles on the road abates considerably.
