“5 MINUTE WALK TO LAKE LOUISE”

The hotel is an old one but a good one. It has the character you would expect for being located in the Rockies. It looks and feels like a lodge, post and beam structure with alot of old hunting and hiking memorabilia. Great place for the price. We walked up to the Lake Louise for sunrise on the mountains. Beautiful.

“A lovely place in Lake Louise”

The Deer Lodge hotel is a lovely place to stay, very conveniently located a few seconds from the lake. Its rooms do not include a TV but who cares when staying in such a wonderful area!

“Classic Charm”

Despite a couple of flaws, Deer Lodge has old school charm that will appeal to the traveler who is looking for more than the standard "cookie cutter" experience. Surrounded by trees and just off the lake, it blends elegantly with the natural environment in way that its gaudy neighbor will probably never appreciate. Despite a somewhat worn exterior (not sure how old this place is, but I'm guessing 75 years or more), the interior is well appointed with spacious rooms, a redone bath (in our case at least), real woodwork, real wooden doors with real keys, real balconies with real doors that open and allow entry of fresh air. A spacious, airy room downstairs has numerous tables for games, reading, or computing, and adjoins a lovely sitting room that always has a roaring fire (gas, but in a real, gigantic fireplace). There is also a deck with tables. The overall affect is a cross between a hunting lodge and a country estate, in either case hearkening to the early 1900s. The restaurant is one of the best in the area, with fare that is good but not quite great. Although a little pricey, I would recommend giving it a try, especially if you are tired of the mediocre hotel fare and fast food (homemade ice cream is delicious!). The service is upbeat and efficient and never stuffy or obsequious, although we did have one terrible experience, which I believe was specific to a certain individual and not thematic. The overall value is quite good.

What to pack
A fall jacket, good shoes, and rain gear. If you are coming from the US, the summer weather may seem more like that of October of November to you.

“Winter Wonderland”

This was my 6th year at Deer Lodge! Deer Lodge is a Historical Landmark Hotel and it is a bit rustic, but they have the most comfy feather beds. If you are looking for something modern and plastic with a TV in the room don,t stay there. This hotel is about location and charm. I have always found the staff very helpful and friendly and very interesting to talk to as they come from all over the world. Breakfast is my favorite meal there with a million dollar view of Victoria Glacier. I go to ski and Lake Louise ski area is minutes away by the hotels shuttle. Cross country sking is just out the front door and don't forget to walk up to Lake Louise (5minutes) and take a walk to the far end of the lake. If you are lucky there will be ice climbers on falls there.

“Mixed Feelings”

Deer Lodge looks quaint from the outside but is just ok on the inside. Needs remodeling and our room had a funny smell to it. Dilapidated, closed up building next to the main lodge on the same grounds doesn't help create a warm impression either. Couldn't access Comcast email on their Internet computer - must have it blocked somehow - frustrating. Overall it was adequate but I wouldn't return. Everything in the Banff - Jasper area is way overpriced. Jasper Best Western was our next stop - very nice but ridiculously overpriced.

“Don't stay on the 3rd floor in old section -- actually, stay in Field 15-20 min. west”

We arrived about 6:00 pm and there was no parking left, even to check in, probably because a wedding was scheduled for that night. There are no bargains anywhere in Lake Louise. We reserved the least expensive room, but it still cost significantly more than any hotel we stayed in Banff, or Jasper. Dragged bags from far lot past smokers by the entrance, up 2 flights (no elevator), to a room the size of a jail cell (313). No physical place for 2 bags w/o blocking your way from bed to door. Refused to take room (broken mattress) and was shown one 2 doors down (309 or 311). Only marginally bigger, but room to walk to door. Single old uncomfortable chair. Scarred "antique" (think Good Will) furniture, stained carpet. Dormers took up lots of vertical space. Tiny bathroom with no place to set down your toothbrush. We're both small people and still felt closed in. Old building sagged so much downhill that by morning, mattress pad had slipped 4 in. over the side of the double-bed. I literally kept sliding out of the bed. Would have upgraded no matter the cost had there been rooms available, but wedding had them booked up. Had we not already pre-paid, we would have left for Field or Banff. We like the privacy of our room, so not fond of common areas, but they were filled anyway because of wedding. My recommendation is to grab a B & B in Field (we liked Old Doctor's House -- sparsely furnished, but full BR/LR/Kitchen). And it's only 20 min. from Lake Louise.

Area recommendations
The tiny town of Field is only 20 minutes max from Lake Louise. It's full of B&B's and much less expensive. And there's an incredible restaurant there (Truffled Pig) serving gourmet food. Also, a general store across the street that serves delicious wraps and other food for reasonable prices. Open 8 am to 8 pm. Grab a home-made muffin for breakfast. Plus don't miss Takakkaw falls, a few miles off the main road just east of Field. It's incredible and visible from the parking lot. Only 5-min walk to base of falls. Emerald lake is nice too. Lake Louise is a beautiful lake. If you're up to it, hike up to the Tea House from the Chateau. It's about 4 miles round trip. Steep in places, but worth it. Grab some tea and a sandwich and admire the mountains. There's a tough and longer hike up to the Big Beehive (which we didn't take). We added the extra mile (round trip) to the Little Beehive. Not that steep and well worth the effort for a spectacular view of the divide. The trip in the Gondola (chair-lift or enclosed) is worth the money. Great views and we saw a grizzly right underneath us. It's not uncommon we were told. Incredible drive up the Icefield Pkwy. Consider a stop at Glacier Center and a ride on the Snow Coach right onto the Athabasca Glacier. Glacier Center has excellent exhibit and info about the glaciers.

“A bit funky but fun”

Deer Lodge is an old hotel. Being historic, it is not upgraded in some ways (bathrooms for example) that many would like. It was not a problem for us. We liked the hotel which is within easy walking distance to Lake Louise. The public spaces are rustic but fun and we had an excellent dinner in the bar area which is less expensive than the formal dining room. We stayed only one night but could have enjoyed another day or two there. Some rooms are nicer than others so, for an extended stay, I would ask for a room with a balcony. Ours did not have that nor too much of a view but for one night we didn't care. Who wants to be in the room anyway when you are in such a beautiful location?

When to go
We were there at peak season in late July. Would recommend going in September or early October to avoid the crowds.
Must see
Do not miss Lake Loraine. It is even more stunning than Lake Louise and is only a short 15 minute drive away. The tour buses do not go there so it is less crowded and the water is a spectacular blue compared to the green color of Lake Louise. Both are stunning. I would also recommend doing the gondola ride. It is a bit expensive, but the view from the top is worth it.
