Castle by the river

Posted Jul 17, 2014
Pros: The hotel valet staff were excellent. So helpful, nothing a problem. Loved the spa too.
Location: Great for hiking, white water rafting and wildlife tours.
It's an imposing hotel when you first lay eyes on it. I was very excited about my stay after an excellent stay at The Fairmont Macdonald in Edmonton. I had one of those rare unfortunate stays which I know is not the norm at Fairmont hotels. My check-in took a lot time to sort out with no explanation for the delay. My room smelt of food from the previous occupant, there was a hole in my bed sheet, and the shower curtain was dirty. Add to that, there was a wedding right below my bedroom. The whole room shook - I could even hear the DJ which meant I didn't get to sleep until past midnight when the music finally stopped. On the plus side, the hotel valet staff were excellent as always.

Subjected to eviction and over-charged shamelessly

Posted Jul 15, 2014
Pros: The staff was unfailingly friendly. In our case, however, corporate guidelines apparently constrained them in efforts to solve the problem.
Cons: Individual guests should be valued as much as tour groups.
We booked a two-night stay at an exorbitant rate (to which parking and internet access added not insignificantly). Upon check-in, we were told that we would have to vacate our room after the first night and move to another due to "inventory". That term was never really explained to us, but I suspect that a bus tour group, to which this hotel seems most to cater, forced the move. The bus tourists probably also get the reasonable rates. Our steep rate bought us only a tiny room. I paced it ... five steps from exterior wall across the room. I must say that the staff was apologetic and did make some attempt to alleviate matters, but their attitude probably reflected more the Canadian character than any corporate concern for guests. I have concluded from our stay at this hotel and two days earlier at the Empress in Victoria that the Fairmont corporate strategy is to acquire architecturally distinctive older hotels with reputations for elegance. But instead of providing the unique experience that guests choosing such hotels would expect, Fairmont gouges them. Those guests never return, of course, but Fairmont still is able to fill rooms with others drawn by the hotels' exceptional prior reputations. And the tour companies provide a base of support. So, my advice to anyone visiting Banff is to treat this hotel like a museum. Visit it briefly, walking around to imagine what lodging might have been like there in decades long past, but sleep elsewhere.

Classy!

Posted Jul 13, 2014
First class! Treated like royalty! From valet to housekeeping staff, my needs were paramount. Worth every penny. The food was superior and the pools and workout facilities great. Our room was spotless. Only thing we had to request was new batteries for the TV remote.

We've been going to Banff Fairmont for years

Posted Jul 6, 2014
Pros: The location! Beautiful views
Cons: Lower the room rates, totally ridiculous rates for such small rooms. Air conditioning, it was hot the week we were there.
Location: Great town of Banff has cute attractions, shops and restaurants. Great hiking all over the area, you need a car. Golfing, biking, relaxing/
However, this time I noticed run down conditions, no air conditioning in the rooms, we had to wait two hours after check in for our room. Smallest most expensive room we've ever stayed in. - Because we booked it through Expedia! The restaurants Samarai was still awesome as usual, There is a new Indian restaurant which is now in the old Castle bar.

Wonderful hotel, but...

Posted Jul 3, 2014
The hotel and facilities (gym, restaurants, etc) are top notch. Rooms are clean and well maintained, but quite small. We paid for a basic room with a "valley view" (costs a bit more than mountain view), instead of a suite, so perhaps that explains the size of the room. The location is excellent and within easy walking distance to the town of Banff. The staff a very friendly and polite and always seemed eager to help. Having said that though, getting things like slippers or the like delivered to your room take quite a long time (30min). Although I do understand they make money from this, many things seem to be "nickle and dimed" at the hotel. No free parking ($25/day if you self park, more for valet parking (obviously) - although there is very limited free parking close to the hotel, it's only allowed during certain times of the day), you have to pay for the internet, etc. Overall though, I would definitely recommend the hotel if it's in your budget. The building alone is worth it!

Nice hotel, not worth the price

Posted Jun 27, 2014
Pros: View from lounge is breathtaking
Cons: Better description of the room and view No minibar Signature restaurant closed when the hotel is full
Hotel provide a room on the ground floor, window at almost eye level and all could see was the grass lawn and parking structure. Overall, very disappointing for paying $600 a night. Bed itself was ok, but I expected more. Beds at a Sheraton/Westin are much better for half the price. We stayed the first night in Banff at a local lodge and the room comfort was equal to the Fairmont for 1/5 the price. We only chose that because Fairmont was full the night we arrived, in fact, we should have stayed put.

Castle stay

Posted Jun 10, 2014
Service is outstanding from the moment you arrive, from the valet attendant, bellhop, receptionist to waitress, I never felt so welcomed to a hotel before. Rooms are pricey but for an experience of living in a 100 year old castle in the mountains, hey why not splurge a little? The Rooms were clean, beds/pillows were too soft for my liking (I prefer them firm). The toilet probably needs some maintenance, I had the bathtub faucet came off but easily fixed it myself, Shower lever was coming loose as well. Also wish I had the ability to control the heater in the room from becoming too dry. I recommend trying the buffet breakfast at least once, it's $30 per pax but the quality and quantity food is top notch.

it really is a castle

Posted Jun 9, 2014
Pros: everything! well mostly how convenient it becomes for guests to book activities.
Cons: well the rooms are a bit small... and some old facilities may need better cleaning
Location: it's right outside of Banff town centre. on the back is a 27-holes golf course and rafting. there are also shuttle buses at the hotel to most activity
the hotel itself is an attraction! it has the classical architecture and beautiful views from rooms! the golf course is also worth visiting (though I'm not a fan of golf...) the forth tee (or however they call it...) is like no other course, I would say this tee itself will worth a special visit to the golf course. Also they have all kinds of facilities there! you will never get bored!

Nice but problems

Posted May 26, 2014
- 80% of staff we encountered were friendly, helpful, and professional - we stayed 6 nights; one morning there was no hot water - on the Sunday night, there was a loud wedding going on with crappy, foreign music. Impossible to get sleep with all the noise. Complaint to front desk person indicated loud music would end by a certain time. Perhaps nOt surprisingly it lasted an hour longer than front desk person said it would.
