Magnificent Hotel in a beautiful part of the world

Posted Aug 15, 2014
My wife and I consider ourselves to be seasoned travelers and the five nights we spent at the Fairmount in Banff were exquisite. The share scale of the hotel set amongst the Canadian Rockies is breathtaking. The staff were most pleasant and helpful. We stayed on Concierge floor, which provided us private access to sumptuous breakfasts and happy hours each day. While the rooms were not large by some standards it was beautifully appointed and very clean. The spa amenities were some of the best we've ever had. Though not inexpensive we highly recommend this hotel.

Quick Stay

Posted Aug 13, 2014
We stayed here the night before my wife and I's 10 year wedding anniversary. Hotel was nice, convenient to town, and close to local activities. Hotel even upgraded us to a river view room and brought up a complimentary bottle of champagne for us. We did not not eat at the restaurants as we opted to go into town. The only draw-back was the number of bus tours, but it was peak tourist season in that part of Canada, and there were bus tours everywhere.

Dissapointing

Posted Aug 10, 2014
Pros: Exterior
Cons: How about a working AC! Change the OLD AC wiring system. It's ridiculous!
Other than the beauty of this hotel, the rooms are very uncomfortable. The AC barely works, obviously still using an old AC wiring system. No wonder they put a ceiling fan to make up for the AC - unacceptable! The bathrooms are very, very small with hardly any space or counter for personal items. And oh, you have to fight for the bathroom door to open after closing it - ridiculous! The tub does not drain fast enough so your feet are submerged in your own water bath while taking a shower - disgusting! We reported the problems twice. There was nothing they can do about it. Old historic hotels are supposed to be nice, but with this one - the rooms are NOT well kept to provide comfort. Not at all! And for the price? Definitely NOT WORTH IT!

A must!!

Pros: The views and the linens
Cons: bigger bathrooms
Location: You could do everything or nothing and it would be great either way
One of the most beautiful places on earth.... and this hotel is so well planned. Every view, every turn of the corner, every table, everything was perfect.

Beautiful old Hotel!

Posted Aug 3, 2014
Pros: The atmosphere has to be experienced to really appreciate the whole place!
Cons: Having a less expensive place to take kids to eat please. We had to find a place in Town for them.
Location: The Bowling Alley was really great for the kids. The walking tours were very good. Lots of history here & the scenery is fantastic!
Very nice to experience staying here. Really enjoyed my stay!

Nice historic hotel but overpriced.

Posted Aug 2, 2014
Stayed on 5th floor concierge level. First room we had was next to family with 3 screaming kids. They moved us to another room and it was nice but bathroom was so small you could hardly shut the door. Loose dogs were running down the hall and children were heard crying most of the time. Not a good experience. Also big hole in mattress and noisy pipes woke us up.

Castle by the river

Pros: The hotel valet staff were excellent. So helpful, nothing a problem. Loved the spa too.
Location: Great for hiking, white water rafting and wildlife tours.
It's an imposing hotel when you first lay eyes on it. I was very excited about my stay after an excellent stay at The Fairmont Macdonald in Edmonton. I had one of those rare unfortunate stays which I know is not the norm at Fairmont hotels. My check-in took a lot time to sort out with no explanation for the delay. My room smelt of food from the previous occupant, there was a hole in my bed sheet, and the shower curtain was dirty. Add to that, there was a wedding right below my bedroom. The whole room shook - I could even hear the DJ which meant I didn't get to sleep until past midnight when the music finally stopped. On the plus side, the hotel valet staff were excellent as always.

Subjected to eviction and over-charged shamelessly

Posted Jul 15, 2014
Pros: The staff was unfailingly friendly. In our case, however, corporate guidelines apparently constrained them in efforts to solve the problem.
Cons: Individual guests should be valued as much as tour groups.
We booked a two-night stay at an exorbitant rate (to which parking and internet access added not insignificantly). Upon check-in, we were told that we would have to vacate our room after the first night and move to another due to "inventory". That term was never really explained to us, but I suspect that a bus tour group, to which this hotel seems most to cater, forced the move. The bus tourists probably also get the reasonable rates. Our steep rate bought us only a tiny room. I paced it ... five steps from exterior wall across the room. I must say that the staff was apologetic and did make some attempt to alleviate matters, but their attitude probably reflected more the Canadian character than any corporate concern for guests. I have concluded from our stay at this hotel and two days earlier at the Empress in Victoria that the Fairmont corporate strategy is to acquire architecturally distinctive older hotels with reputations for elegance. But instead of providing the unique experience that guests choosing such hotels would expect, Fairmont gouges them. Those guests never return, of course, but Fairmont still is able to fill rooms with others drawn by the hotels' exceptional prior reputations. And the tour companies provide a base of support. So, my advice to anyone visiting Banff is to treat this hotel like a museum. Visit it briefly, walking around to imagine what lodging might have been like there in decades long past, but sleep elsewhere.
