A foodie guide to Spain - “It’s no secret that Spain is a top travel destination. The cities—especially Barcelona—are exciting. The chic hotels are second to none. The streets are a clash of gothic cathedrals and Gaudí modernism. Every spur and side alley is a gateway to a new and exciting angle on architecture and culture. And everywhere you look, there are great restaurants and tapas stands.
"Tawny and I took our most recent trip to Spain this past spring. Our destination: the Costa Brava region, the northeast territory of Spain that clutches the coast and cuddles with France's southern border. Costa Brava was the scene for our storybook adventure with fellow Expedia Viewfinder contributors, the NVR Guys. The region also represents an excellent cross-section of the foodie scene in Spain. Today, that scene is the stage for many new chefs to create avant-garde cooking styles that draw deeply from the country’s traditions.”

This beyond-cool metropolis is home to some of the country’s most iconic sights, and hotels in Barcelona, Spain cater to travelers who can’t wait to see them all. Reviews of Arc la Rambla
“The rooms are small but very clean and comfortable. The hotel staff are very friendly, helpful and courteous. We really enjoyed our stay! Breakfast choices could be better though and tea and coffee in the room would be good but for the price it's excellent value. The central location is perfect for exploring beautiful Barcelona.”
“I spent three nights at the Arc la Rambla and enjoyed the stay. The reception staff all spoke very good English and were pleasant and helpful. The location is great, right on La Rambla and about a ten minute or so walk from the Placa de Catalunya. (Plenty of bars and restaurants in the immediate vicinity but I would recommend exploring the ones on the side streets, as they are less of a tourist trap. I only went in the bar/restaurant attached to the hotel for a coffee/croissant breakfast but that was nice.) The room was spacious and clean and the bathroom modern and roomy.”
“Loved location on La Rambla. Very convenient for our activities, sight-seeing, and especially convenient for going to restaurants. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were well equipped and very clean. The room was also quiet, overlooking La Rambla. We would definitely stay there again and highly recommend it to others.”
Reviews of Barcelo Sants
“Very friendly and professional staff. Good links to the tour buses. Quiet hotel and very comfortable rooms, which had a daily maid service. Tea and coffee making facilities.”
“Great place for the money. Only concern was the dark hallways ...was part of the futuristic theme of the hotel. The staff were VERY helpful and spoke good English. We would stay there again if in Barcelona.”
“We were upgraded to two inter connecting rooms, and we were delighted with the rooms. We were staying in Barcelona for just one night, coming in from Cadaques, and then getting the train from Estacio Sants to Paris the next day. This hotel was so perfect, just literally part of Estacio Sants station, but yet quiet and luxurious. What a change from the usual hotels near the station, which tend to be a bit dodgy. Our daughter loved the quirky space theme! Very, very comfortable, lovely bathrooms, really great place to rest after or before a long train journey.”
Reviews of Confortel Almirante
“I stayed in this hotel with 6 friends for a long weekend. We were pleased to find the hotel was in a great location in the center of the city. We could walk to all the places, restaurants, shops, and sight-seeing sights. Rooms were spacious and comfortable and cleaned spectacularly every day.”
“Short stay was just there overnight before departing Barcelona for Calgary. Well located (5-minute walk) to Old Town and easy to get to airport for an early AM flight. Room was a good size, had a terrace with a good view. Beds pretty comfortable. So just fine for a 1 or 2 night stay.”
“Booked a very last-minute mini-break a few days before we were due to fly. Confortel Almirante was very high up on the recommendation list and the reviews and price seemed very good! Hotel staff was very pleasant and welcoming and location of the hotel was brilliant (for what you pay - obviously you would pay a lot more to stay right on La Rambla itself, but we were just a five-minute walk through the beautiful Gothic Quarter). Facilities were basic, but we were too busy exploring the city to need a pool etc. and the rooms were clean and pleasant with a great view out the balcony. Will definitely be going back for our next mini-break!”
Reviews of Olivia Balmes Hotel
“We were there for the weekend and had a fabulous time, the hotel was near the airport and in walking distance of the more lively areas and shops. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful and advised us of places to go.”
“From the minute we arrived to the minute we left, staff at the hotel always very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious too. We will definitely go back on our next trip to Barcelona.”
“We stayed 4 nights. The location is excellent if you like walking as we managed to walk to Gothic Quarter, beach area, Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Montjuic. Close to Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. Hotel staff could not have been more helpful and gave excellent advice about places to see. Lots of little bars and good restaurants nearby, and certainly no shortage of places to get breakfasts. Metro station nearby also. Room was very comfortable, but with a few teething problems to be ironed out in the bathroom. Overall an absolutely excellent stay.”
Reviews of Nh Podium
“Me and a friend stayed for a long weekend and it was a great base to explore the city. It was about 10-min walk from some of the main squares, which made it a quiet retreat, with a roof terrace to have a drink and recuperate. Breakfast was delicious and had longer hours so we were still able to enjoy even after getting up a little later.”
“Nice, clean, & decent hotel close to Rambla street. There are lot of options to eat around the hotel and the Metro is also close by. If you want to enjoy the night life at Rambla street, then this hotel is conveniently located. The hotel is quite modern from inside and has a pool and gym. Rooms are fitted with speakers, which play nice lounge music. All over a nice stay!!”
“Hotel was located about a 10-min walk to the center of the city... rooms were big and spacious. Staff was excellent, very helpful. I highly recommended hotel for its great location.”
Reviews of Hotel Villa Emilia
“Hotel Villa Emilia was prefect for us. It is an ideal location just outside the center. The facilities are modern and clean, the staff are amazing. We had two evening meals at the hotel, which were excellent quality and good value at 25 euros for 3 courses. Also it was lovely to finish our bottle of Cava on the rooftop terrace. We got around the city using the metro, which is very quick, cheap, and user friendly. It's best to pre-book the busy tourist attractions (Sagrada Familia, Gaudi houses, etc.) which we did via the Tourist Information Office in Placa Catalunya and also using the hotel's free Internet. We hope to come back to Barcelona and would definitely stay at Hotel Villa Emilia again.”
“Stayed 3 nights on 24th April 2014. Great Hotel, good location, 20-min walk to Las Ramblas or has a metro stop 2-min walk away. Very helpful friendly staff. Lovely, modern clean rooms. Lovely roof terrace. Had free cake with tea or coffee between 5-7pm, great touch! Would definitely recommend.”
“Superb hotel in Barcelona, with excellent and friendly staff as well as great food and a lovely bar area. Good location for getting into the city center, only a 10-min walk. Also a great location for using the aerobus when arriving at the city airport. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel to family and friends!”
Reviews of Praktik Rambla
“Our room was beautiful. Comfortable and spotless. The hotel is boutique style with a lovely terrace to chill out on and is in a fab location about five to ten-minute walk from La Rambla. Would definitely stay there again.”
“Staff was fantastic at Praktik. Always willing to help and give information/directions. The location is very central, but quieter end of La Rambla, so we were able to sleep well. The building itself has a lot of charm and our room was very clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again the next time we are in Barcelona!”
“I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Barcelona. This hotel is in the perfect location for sightseeing, and it is surrounded by great restaurants. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, and they gave us a free room upgrade when we checked in. Everything about our stay here was perfect, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable, but memorable stay.”
Reviews of Eurostars Grand Marina
“We found the staff to be very helpful and professional. And the room was very elegantly appointed. In short, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting Barcelona.”
“Arrived at the hotel and greeted by very friendly reception staff that could not have been more helpful. They even escorted us to our room. Beautiful, large room with view of the sea. Massive bathroom with great bath/shower. Didn’t eat at the hotel, but had a drink in the bar, which was lovely. Hotel is walking distance from La Rambla, El Ravel, Gothic Quarter, Barceloneta, and El Born. Would definitely stay here again.”
“Room was fantastic, with the most comfortable beds - both my friend and I thought the same. Rooftop terrace was lovely, although we didn't use the gym as we were there for a short stay and did too much out of the hotel! I would recommend the hotel to anyone going to Barcelona.”
Reviews of Hotel Espana
“This was a fantastic hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The hotel is beautiful inside with plenty of character. The breakfast room was an absolute delight and the restaurant was also stunning. We were made very welcome and the restaurant staff, in particular, was very helpful in advising us about Catalan specialties. The location is ideal- just off the Rambla, but far enough away to be quiet and peaceful.”
“A fantastic stay on all levels. Comfortable, clean, charming, a great designer boutique hotel. The restaurant and bar a great add on. The staff was very gracious. Lots of character. Perfect for a romantic getaway. Right off the Rambla.”
“Hotel Espana is a real gem in Barcelona. We absolutely adored the hotel - the way it looked, the rooms, the service we received, the location. I cannot rave about this hotel enough!! It was modern, clean, and funky!! A definite thumbs up from us. I would definitely stay there again.”
Reviews of Hotel Barcelona Center
“Great, friendly staff. Recognized and acknowledged you as a guest. Very good location! Would go back again.”
“Had a pleasant room that was clean and quiet. The doorman, George, was very helpful, spoke excellent English and helped us greatly. Our 'queen-size" bed turned out to be two twin beds pushed together, that being our only complaint. The bathroom was very clean, loaded with useful articles. Five of the city’s major attractions were within six blocks of the hotel.”
“The hotel is inviting overall and in a fabulous location. Staff was welcoming and extremely helpful. The room was comfortable, but a little dark due to no outside facing window. There was a good variety of breakfast options, but it was a little pricey.”
Reviews of Vincci Gala
“The hotel is in the perfect location to explore and experience all of the sites of Barcelona. The hotel, itself was well appointed with modern bathroom, large and comfortable beds, and enough room and storage to accommodate two people very well. The staff was friendly and efficient."
“Great central position. Very clean and comfortable. Would thoroughly recommend. Thanks for a great stay. Ten out of ten. :)”
“The hotel was in a great location. Everything was at a walking distance. The metro was down the block. I can't complain.”
Reviews of Hotel Bagues
“Right Downtown Barcelona. Perfect location. The staff has been fantastic. Young, dynamic people always on top of our requests. When I am back in Barcelona, this will be my hotel again.”
“This was our second stay and it just got even better! The meal was excellent and the staff superb. Comfortable beds, and in spite of overlooking La Rambla, the windows were so good you could hear nothing from the street. I could not recommend this hotel more highly.”
“Perfect location. Friendly staff. Good restaurant. Beautiful room, just a little bit small. Really close to Boqueria. There’s a really good bar near the hotel called Lobo Bar. Our room had a great view of La Rambla. It was really a pleasant experience. I would definitely stay again at this hotel.”
Reviews of Pulitzer
“Highly recommend this hotel. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. Rooms were clean and spacious. Location was perfect. It was close to shopping and multiple restaurants. We had a family of four and all of us were very impressed with this hotel.”
“We stayed in Barcelona for one night, and wanted a property close to Placa de Catalunya, La Ramblas, Airport bus stops, shopping, and dining. The hotel was in a perfect location. Close to it all, but not affected by noise. The room was well-sized, clean, and modern, and the bathroom was large, well- appointed, and very clean with a bath and shower.”
“We spent a night at the Pulitzer Hotel in Barcelona between a cruise and returning home. The hotel was very nice and comfortable with a great location right near the Placa de Catalunya. It is walking distance to the Las Ramblas, Gothic Quarter, shopping, and transportation. We would highly recommend it! The staff was very friendly and quite helpful.”
Reviews of Barcelo Raval
“Hotel seems brand new with 360-degree views of the city from the roof- view from the rooms is fantastic as well. Super modern and just a five- minute walk to La Rambla, surrounded by tons of doner kebab restaurants and coffee shops. It's a fantastic location- also walking distance to two different train stops. Highly recommended!”
“Nice room, a bit small, but modern and well decorated. Interesting area opposite side of Ramblas to Gothic Quarter. Great views from top floor viewing area.”
“A wonderful stay in a wonderful hotel. Clean at all times and with excellent staff who were always willing to help. The room was a high standard and had everything a traveler could need. The hotel was in a nice area and no problems were encountered. We will use the hotel the next time we go to Barcelona.”
Reviews of Hesperia Ramblas
“Only a few minutes from La Boqueria Market, Liceu Metro station, and of course Las Ramblas. Yet it is quiet and the room was well kept. Worth the price!”
“Comfortable bed, good shower, excellent location, obliging staff, priced right. We stayed for two nights prior to a cruise departure. Would stay again.”
“Had a nice time going in and out of the hotel because it’s located right in the center of the city where most of the attraction and goings on are. The staff was readily on hand to answer all of my question, even though there is only one available at a time. Great experience.”
“We loved this hotel! It was modern, clean, and the staff was extremely friendly. Its location couldn't be beat! It was one block off the Rambla with restaurants and shopping. Highly recommend this hotel.”
“All staff spoke good English and was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very relaxed and smart. Room was good and very modern, as were the general public areas. The hotel is in a good location to walk to many places and near to the metro station. Plenty of bars, etc. close by. Ideal for a short break.”
“Staff was very helpful and made for an extremely pleasant stay. The hotel is in a great central location within 10 minutes of La Rambla, but far enough away to avoid the crowds. There are numerous bars and restaurants within close proximity. Would definitely stay there on return to Barcelona.”
Reviews of Barcelona Atiram Hotel
“This is a very clean and affordable hotel - large room, separate bathroom (shower/bath), and separate toilet room, which was ideal for twin share. Included free Wi-Fi and was a great base from which to explore and enjoy Barcelona.”
“The hotel is in a great location and only around a 5 euro bus ride from the airport, which runs every 10 minutes and takes you a couple of minutes to walk from the hotel. We were fortunate enough to have a room with a terrace overlooking Plaza Cataluna, which was fab, so would recommend requesting one of those (although not guaranteed). Staff was really helpful and friendly. Room was cleaned every day.”
“The hotel is in a great location (across from Plaza Cataluña) and our room was very comfortable. The room was clean and neat (nothing luxurious). The staff was helpful when we needed directions.”
Reviews of Pestana Arena Barcelona
“Conveniently located 5-minute walk from Barca Saints station and two minutes from the green line. Easy access to the airport and all the tourist areas. Clean spacious rooms and big bathrooms. Very reasonably priced.”
“I was there for five nights. The staff was very friendly the room was very clean. Location was perfect; easy access to anywhere. I enjoyed it a lot. Next time I will choose this hotel again. Highly recommended.”
“Excellent hotel in an even better location!! Would recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Barcelona and wants a clean modern hotel with helpful staff and with access to every area of Barcelona. Overall great hotel, you won't be disappointed!”
Reviews of Confortel Auditori
“The location is within walking distance of the Arc de Triomf and the Sagrada Familia (and therefore Metro stations too). The interior is simple and well decorated, incredibly clean, and the staff is extremely helpful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone, and if I return to Barcelona, I would definitely stay here again.”
“Good hotel with good breakfast. Central location with good access to the city center. Staff was great and hotel is opened all night. Recommended.”
“The rooms are sleek and modern, very clean and well stocked with fresh towels and toiletries. The front desk were incredibly helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Their English was superb. In particular, Dean and Javier were most helpful. The cleaning staff was charming and so friendly. My only criticism would have to be the lack of an iron - the hotel doesn't have one to lend, although they do offer a laundry service. However, to keep budget travelers happy, having a single iron and board would definitely be my recommendation :)”
Reviews of NH Calderon
“Great hotel, with an ideal location next to Catalunya Square. Amazing rooftop pool and views of the city. Enjoyed watching the sunset on the rooftop.”
“The NH Calderon was well situated, close to the Plaza Catalunya, and within easy access to La Rambla. Close to many bars and restaurants and theatres, and also the tour bus stops. It was also within relatively easy walking distance to the shops and also the beach.”
“We come here every year and love the place. Great staff and service, and the hotel is situated in a great area surrounded by a large number of good places to eat. We'll be back again next year. Gracias!”
Reviews of Mercer Boria Bcn
“Small, ultra-moderne meets old in Barri Gothic. Tucked behind heavy wooden doors (responsive receptionist will buzz you in), is a gem of a place perfectly suited to all of the best sites, restaurants, and bars. If you are self-sufficient and low maintenance, and appreciate sparse moderne and a yummy bed (a bit loud as all hard surfaces), this is an economical and hip spot in the thick of the best of Barcelona.”
“Second time staying in this hotel. Very Nice hotel. Walking distance to metro, shops, and tourist places. Small hotel, but certainly recommended. Rooms are nice and very clean. Located In the old gothic part of the city, so not a lot of natural light in the rooms. I would stay again.”
“The hotel’s location is very convenient. The rooms are very comfortable, well maintained, and well decorated. The only downside is that in the first floor rooms are a bit dark, however, we’re out most part of the day, so that was not a problem for us. Hotel's staff was very helpful. I would strongly recommend this hotel in Barcelona.”
Reviews of Oriente Atiram Hotel
“The Oriente Hotel in Barcelona is situated on La Ramblas, a main visitor avenue, which leads down to the harbor area. It is comfortable, the staff is very helpful and obliging, and it is convenient for access to the metro. There are no tea-making facilities in the rooms, but a kettle was produced for our use on request. We would be happy to stay there again.”
“Friendly reception on arrival. Room was spotless and to a decent standard. Didn't do breakfast as was told it was only continental, but had a nosey as we were leaving and there was bacon sausage and scrambled egg, which looked good. No bar, but no issue as plenty were very close by. Great location and would definitely go back. For a budget short break would definitely recommend.”
“I had a great experience staying here for 3 nights - the hotel is extremely central, located on La Ramblas, and the staff was very helpful. The room (two twin beds) was a decent size, and the bathroom was nice. It's not extravagant by any means, but it's perfect for an affordable weekend stay.”
Reviews of Hotel 1898
"A sense of grandeur and yet certainly not ostentatious. Wood panel and stone floor in reception. Leather armchairs and comfortable sofas in the lobby and bar. Wonderful rooms too. Having been to this hotel at least six times, I highly recommend it. Being half Spanish, I enjoy it as a tourist and as the son of a Spaniard."
"Upscale, clean, warm hotel facilities and rooms, and super-friendly and helpful staff, made our five night stay here most enjoyable. It is in the very heart of the boisterous Ramblas district. Great room selections and amenities, including a roof-top pool and deck and spa facilities in the basement. All of the staff were super friendly, attentive, and helpful."
"Having stayed in Barcelona quite a few times, it was a surprise to find this elegant hotel on the Ramblas. Top service from all staff, luxurious rooms, classically grand tea/coffee /drink areas on the ground floor and a pool area on the roof worth making a further visit in the summer. An oasis of calm elegance on the Ramblas."
Reviews of Hotel Atenea Port Barcelona Mataro
"Nothing but good things to stay about the accommodation provided at the hotel. Being a first time visitor to Barcelona, from the minute we checked in to the minute we checked out, the stay was pleasant, the staff was friendly, and the experience was one to remember. Being just outside Barcelona had its upsides. After a hectic day with all the tourists and the crowd, it was enjoyable to come back to a peaceful location knowing that your room had been taken care of. The food at the restaurant was good too. If I visit again, I know where I'll be staying."
"Beautiful modern hotel with every facility. Ten-minute walk along marina and sea front to railway station for 40-minute train ride into central Barcelona. Food was excellent and service/reception was good. No hesitation in returning to hotel."
"Had a thoroughly enjoyable stay! Staff is excellent and the breakfasts were very good. Had meal in hotel on one night of visit, which was very good in tastefully decorated restaurant. Plenty of other eating places nearby as well if you wish. Ideal base to visit Barcelona, but come back to relax at night!"
