Unique location, but the hotel has some deficits.

Posted Aug 31, 2014
The hotel web site advertises "Free Parking". However, this is very deceptive since there is no parking at the hotel. The nearest free parking is a public parking area about half a mile away along a cobble stone road. Even here, a parking space is not necessarily available due to shortage of space, so the only other option is parking along crowded city roads even further away. The hotel room had no bureau drawers so there was no way to lay out clothes. We had to live out of our suitcases for the duration of our stay.

Living in the Medieval Matera...Fantastic!

Posted Jun 17, 2014 on Hotels.com
We loved our stay and the pool in the cave! The only difficulty was finding the B&B......It would be helpful for Locanda di San Martino to send a map showing its location once tourists arrive to Matera!

Did I get what I paid for?

Posted Jun 15, 2014 on Hotels.com
I do think it was a beautiful hotel. However, my room was located right to the end and it faces a wall and not a garden. There is an open gate that I feared strangers may enter. In the evening, I could not open my windows as a group of girls hang out outside my room. At 12 midnight, I was awaken by loud talking and I peered out and saw about a dozen or more young men hanging outside my room. The room is at street level. Although the hotel staff managed to get the boys to leave, from then on I was concerned with security. So (1) my room did not overlook any garden and (2) the room was located right at the end with window facing the road. Thus, it did not seem to me that I received the room in your description.

Excellent location in sassi area - great view

Posted Nov 11, 2013
Our room was 20b. Stayed There in forst week pf November and all hotel amenities were avalable (unlike most hotels in Italy at that time of Year). Great views of the sassi on opposite hillside and the sunsets. Room was well appointed and comfortable. Staff were most helpful and and handled our broken Italian with aplomb. Would stay there again without a doubt.

Unique, and wonderful

Pros: Location. Rooms. Setting. Front desk folks. Cleanliness. And the thermae and pool: awesome.
Cons: Not much, and have it seem this authentic.
Just a great place to stay. The room was immaculate ... small, if you're an American, but normal to anyone else, and beautiful ... opens directly outdoors to the Sassi. And the bathroom was clean and excellent too, with ample everything.

No one told us the spa was CLOSED!

Posted Oct 5, 2013 on Hotels.com
After booking nearly a year in advance we arrived to find the Spa CLOSED! Hotels dot com and the hotel had our email address and could have let us know so that we could have made other arrangements. We are very disappointed in Hotels dot com and will not use the service again. The SPA is the only reason we came to this hotel.

A Sassi Experience!

Posted Sep 15, 2013
Pros: Unique feel that represented Matera and its history
Cons: Coffee facilities in room.
Location: Town of Matera - and its sassi (caves) history.
Stayed here for 3 nights at start of our stay in SE Italy. Was a bit tricky to find as it is buried in the narrow streets of a Sassi hillside (which you find out after you have been there a little while). As is advertised there is nowhere to park your car - there is an offer to park it in a near(ish) car park for 10 euros per day (with an optional pick up for additional 5 euro charge). There is the option of parking it in a free scrubland car park which is about 10 minutes walk away - which is what we did. The hotel itself is set amongst the caves in the hillside with the rooms emulating living in a cave - this is quirky but really works and gives the rooms a basic but special feel - and no problem with noisy neighbours. We loved the room! Breakfast was typically continental although some hot food was available and was accompanied by live piano music which gave it a relaxed feel. The thermae (pool, sauna, hydrotherapy pool etc) gave us the opportunity to chill out, which we did on a couple of occasions - a great experience even at 10 euro per person. A couple of additional points - There is a little space to sit outside if you wish. Also, as seems to be the norm in Italy there was no in-room coffee facilities. It is ideally positioned to explore and experience the unique sassi and atmosphere that Matera offers. Beware Matera has a lot of steps and slopes. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Fantastic hotel

We loved staying in this hotel, which was very central for all the restaurants and for exploring Matera. The cave spa was fantastic and the staff were really friendly and helpful.
