Good service but ...Posted Nov 13, 2012 on Hotels.com
I was surprised upon arrival that the location was adjacent to a busy road and parking spaces scarce. The photo misleads one to think it is more rural. Staff were attentive and I could not fault the service but the rooms were severely lacking.. An ancient 12in TV with a comment that if it doesn't work you might need to retune. The bed was like sleeping on a board and the road very noticeable and would expect secondary glazing..so a very bad night. The ensuite was small and you had to climb up into the shower through a small gap between the panels. Am very surprised at a 4star AA rating although food was excellent.

Great individual place, home from homePosted Oct 22, 2012 on Hotels.com
Be under no illusion when comparing this to the other hotels in the area, this does not compare to a Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express or other mass produced brands who just want you in and out with minimal fuss, this place is a real gem. I was surprised by the attentiveness of the staff who were always very polite and efficient when taking food, drink orders or when checking in and out. The location is great for commuters of course this does mean that the road next to the pub gets busy early morning with people flooding to Harpenden train station to commute to London, but if you are there on business then this shouldn't be a problem. My room was over the bar so some sound did travel up into the room but it was not excessive. The room was comfortable and spacious, the mini bar and selection of snacks was a nice surprise as you rarely get that in any of the aforementioned hotels. The evening meal was taken in the pub which was lovely and typical pub price too, which made a nice change from over-inflated hotel restraunt prices. They had a nice selection of local and international lagers and ales and in all the bar and lounge felt homely and snug with some nice old world finishing touches. The brouchure in the room states that they try to blend the facilities of the modern hotel with the charm and character of a traditional pub, and they certainly do.
