The first thing to note about the Sofitel is the location - it is in the Wanda district of Beijing, which includes a movie theatre (connected by an underground parking garage to the hotel) and a shopping center next door, which includes everything from Walmart to Zara. Then, you enter the hotel, with a complete staff from bellmen to a GM whom all speak nearly perfect English. Enter the lobby: immaculate - traditional Sofitel, staff greeting you in French, English and Mandarin. The lovely chandeliers and staff welcome you. The check in and out process was seamless. The hotel room was beautiful, and well-appointed. Fantastic double sinks, I stayed on the club level, and the club room was also wonderfully appointed, made for business travel, with free wifi and food and beverage. I will exclusively stay at the Sofitel Wanda Beijing for all my future travels to Beijing.

This hotel is in a perfect location. Chongwenmen subway station is right outside the front door, and two large malls are close by. It is also very centrally located to get to many of the must see sights in Beijing via subway. The hotel staff was helpful and our room was always clean.

The airport express train station is only 1 minute walk from the hotel. I had an early morning flight to catch and from the hotel to the airport terminal 3 is only taking 15-20 minutes by the airport express train. It worked great to me! The room is very comfortable. Feng Huang Hui, a big shopping center, is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

The hotel said they had a fitness center, pool, and hot tub but when we got there there was nothing. The staff barely spoke english so everytime we called down for room service or extra towels we were told to come downstairs because they didnt understand. The majority of the staff couldnt read english so translating addressesto chinese for cab drivers was horrendous. To top it off the beds were made but I noticed the sheets were never changed. The rooms were tiny. No lock on on the bathroom door. Overall not a relaxing experience.

Stayed a week here, Fall 2013. It is 1 km from Sanlitun and even closer to many restaurants in the neighborhood. In the opposite direction, you are on a busier street and access to subway. I was on the 6th floor facing the street. Window could open; blinds could be drawn to make the room dark. In-room internet was reliable and good enough. (I hard wired my laptop and made it an access point to share via WiFi). I think there might also be WiFi.
7-11 is just about next door and convenient; I could even buy some ice there (small bags). The cafe in the hotel is okay - not terrible. Food was pre-wrapped in cellophane - a little high-priced - like airplane food. I only used it one time. There is some parking in back - which we made use of. One of us was a Chinese speaker so I can't comment on the availability of English speaking at the desk, but they were typical and professional. Yes, there is some DWV odor from the toilet - just keep the door closed. The room was clean enough, cleaning is available every day if you want it.
Bars and restaurants nearby and Sanlitun an easy enough 1 km walk. The room was small ("cute" or "cozy" in real estate speak) but still okay for two. The bathroom was clean with an excellent shower. So, in summary: it is not one of the modern 4 star hotels but a serviceable and clean older (smaller rooms) hotel. If I needed to be in this neighborhood again, I would stay here, unless my company was paying - then I might move up a star.

This was our Tour hotel but I booked in 4 days early by myself. Taxis for everything as the subway 1/2 hour walk. Just too hard. Obviously the Tour operator gets a good rate because of position. See other comments below. It is just fine to stay but I really couldn't recommend as once our organised Tour finished, we stayed at an older hotel near to Tianamen Square that was cheaper and fantastic position for buses, subway and so much else.
