5 great days in Beijing.Posted Dec 9, 2013
Before I booked I noticed other reviews said it was a litle difficult to find down a side alley and our taxi driver also had trouble. Luckily I had directions from my son who stayed there 18 months ago. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room comfortable and very clean. Excellent place to stay if you prefer to avoid the Western style hotels. Easy 10 minute walk to the subway meaning that everything is close! We ate at several excellent local restaurants.

Nice staff and interesting neighborhood.Posted Oct 31, 2013
Pros: Open courtyard and friendly staff.
Location: Very active street at corner with lots of students, restaurants, shops and night life. Nice quiet place to walk in the mornings.
Michael's House was our first stop of a three week tour of China. Room was small but more than adequate. The hard mattresses throughout the tour took some adjusting to. Staff were very helpful and many spoke English. The courtyard was very nice. Very quiet. Would stay again!

Authentic experiencePosted Oct 27, 2013
I sought a hotel other than the impersonal city towers prevalent in Chinese cities. Michael's House was ideal from this standpoint. Plus because it is a b&b there are opportunities to meet and chat with like minded guests. One request: more shelve space in the room for clothing otherwise one must live out of a suitcase. Staff is excellent and extremely helpful.

Cute and clean in convenient areaPosted Oct 22, 2013
We enjoyed our 5 night stay in the Emperor Suite. The hotel is very quiet and clean--sheets crisp, nice fluffy towels changed every day. One surprise is how dark the hutong-style rooms are--you can barely tell it is morning as the room windows face the courtyard and hardly get any light--good for sleeping in! Hearty western breakfast every morning included with the room. The staff speaks English very well and was really helpful in arranging transportation, getting us directions, delivering telephone messages, etc. The neighborhood is 10 minutes to subway and not too far from major sites in Beijing, also filled with local color--street food, etc. Free wireless has some down times but was fine. All really good for the price. We traveled with our 5-year old and noted no other guests with kids during our stay in this B&B-type hotel which I think is most suitable for adults, although fine for us (and staff seemed fine with our 5-year old). If you are looking to be in a hip area near more touristy restaurants, cafes, and attractions this is not it. But otherwise a really good choice and a nice base for Beijing sightseeing.

Our Stay in BeijingPosted Oct 22, 2013
Pros: Staff and the overall atmosphere
Location: close to restaurants and subway, a little hard to find at first but if you ask them to email you directions in Chinese, the taxi driver will find it
The staff was GREAT, special thanks go out to Amy who welcomed us when we arrived and helped us plan our activities during our stay. We felt like family from the moment we walked it. the staff spoke English very well The Hotel itself was very quaint and well looked after. The rooms were great, comfortable beds and clean. We would definitely recommend Michael's House to anyone planning a treip to Beijing

I would recommend...Posted Aug 11, 2013 on Hotels.com
Very helpful staff! The hotel is quite hard to find initially, but the quality of stay makes up for that inconvenience. ALL staff members are generously accommodating, welcoming, and willing to assist. Many staff speak English quite well. It seems as if Michaels House is located about 5 blocks from the subway... So be prepared to walk if traveling by metro. The breakfast buffet is very good.

Great Authentic Chinese Hotel w/ all amenitiesPosted Aug 11, 2013 on Hotels.com
I was very happy with Michael's House. I loved the allure of staying in an authentic Chinese hotel but with basic western amenities. The staff was very kind and spoke English well. We emailed before hand and they surprised me with an upgraded room because I needed a crib for the last night for our newly adopted daughter. The room was clean and the bed so comfy. Air conditioning worked and wifi in the room was great! My only complaint is that they allowed smoking in the enclosed courtyard and our room smelled of smoke. I think they should consider making it non smoking considering it is only steps to the outdoor covered stairs. What was really irritating was that it was Americans lighting up- when we have outlawed smoking public places here for a reason, people... Anyways, that is my only complaint and it is minor. The neighborhood is a REAL neighborhood, so the hotel doesn't have control over the recycling operation/truck down the street which another reviewer posted as being an issue. That's all part of the experience- it's called reality- which for me, was important to have and be open to. Why go to China and stay in another cookie cutter high rise hotel?? Overall, a great stay and would do again.

Excellent place from which to explore BeijingPosted Aug 6, 2013
As first-time visitors to China, we were fortunate to end up at Michael's House. The bilingual staft was very competent and friendly, and helped us get around and see the sights. The hotel is intimate and comfortable. It's in a working class neighborhood, away from the high rises, and you get a good feel for China by walking around. I would recommend Michael's House to anyone.

Awesome Guest House - A+Posted Jul 11, 2013
We totally loved the homeliness of St Michael's House. The staff (particularly Jenny, Little & Sophia) were AWESOME! They were so friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble. The staff shared their knowledge of places to visit in Beijing and organised sightseeing tours for us including booking theatre events - they were so informative and gladly recommended the 'not to miss' sights. All the little extras were appreciated e.g. slippers, dressing gowns, toothbrush/paste, combs, shampoos etc (replenished daily), bottled water, tea & coffee facilities as well as the sumptuous breakfasts. We would definitely return to St Michael's House if visiting Beijing again in the future.

Superb service and atmospherePosted Jun 16, 2013
Pros: Can't say enough about the service. Michael's feels like a version of the real Beijing and not a hermetically sealed Western business hotel.
Location: Ten-minute walk from subway. At least two very good, inexpensive restaurants within a ten-minute walk. Very difficult for taxis to find.
Michael's House is a converted hutong residence that combines the feel of a bygone Beijing with superb service. Hutong means alley, and Michael's House is difficult to find for most taxis. We were fortunate to have our daughter, who was just completing a year's study in China, as guide and interpreter. An Aussie couple said they just handed their cellphone to the driver and let the receptionist at Michael's guide him in. And that set the tone for the kind of excellent, individualised service Michael's gives. Amy and Sophia booked our taxi to the Great Wall (virtually the same price as a bus trip for three), recommended two excellent, inexpensive local restaurants and helped us resolve a problem with our daughter's plane ticket. When the taxi they booked for our ride to the airport failed to show up, they arranged for the handyman at Michael's to give us a ride. To top it off, the breakfast is decent (scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit, yogurt, cereal, bread, cookies and noodles), the lobby/common area is inviting and the rooms are good sized.
