“A Perfect Vacation”

The hotel was absolutely perfect. When we arrived our room was updated without additional cost to the upper level condo. Maryann and the other staff were so accomodating. The local water taxi Tuff E Nuff personnel were great also. We liked the fact that it was far enough away from the town and very quiet, yet close enough to easily take the water taxi which ran very often.

“A very nice resort”

From the moment we arrived till the moment we left, we found the staff to be extremely friendly, helpful and courteous. We were fortunate in getting an oceanfront room that was clean, comfortable, and nicely furnished. Being oceanfront, we constantly had a nice breeze making it comfortable to sit on the front porch. I'll note that this was not the case with some of the units located farther back from the beach, where the lack of breeze made it uncomfortable to sit on the porch due to the heat and mosquitos. Great swimming pool with a nice swim-up bar. The on-site restuarant was OK, but the menu is rather bland compared to others nearby. The complimentary kayaks made it easy to get out to the reef for good snorkeling. Note that the primary modes of transportation on the Caye are via boats, walking, bikes, or golf carts. The limited road system on the island is dirt and in poor condition. Water taxi service is good, convenient, and reasonably priced. We rented a golf cart for the week through the hotel and had a good time with it, but it is a very bumpy ride! San Pedro is about 4 mi south of the resort, and it takes about 25 to 30 minutes via golf cart to get there. And you have to cross a toll bridge ($5 R/T) to get into town. In conclusion, if you are looking for a place for a nice laid-back vacation, the Belizean Shores is a great choice!

Getting there
Note that the packages arranged by Expedia only get you to Belize City. You then have to either take a 25 minute taxi ride to the dock and then take a 75 minute ferry ride to San Pedro, or take a 17 minute plane ride to the San Pedro airstrip. Either option is at extra cost. Once you get to San Pedro, the resort will pick you up in a water taxi for the short trip (15 min) up to the hotel. We took the flying option, using Tropic Air and feel it was a good choice.
Getting around
Getting around on Ambergris Caye is not easy due to the poor condition of the roads. We rented a golf cart for the week, and used it for most of our travel. But be aware that it is more of an ATV adventure than a Sunday drive. The water taxi is probably more convenient, faster, and less expensive in the long run. It should also be noted that some of the "tour packages" offered by Expedia to places such as Mayan ruins and cave tubing originate in Belize City, not San Pedro. Thus you have to get back to the mainland to take the tour. And this requires that you make your own arrangements to either fly of take the ferry, both at additional cost. To avoid this hassle you can make arrangements through the hotel or numerous on island companies for the tours, and the package will include the transportation, and they'll pick you up at the Belizean Shores dock.

“Great Stay!”

We really enjoyed the Belizean Shores! Close enough to town to visit, but far enough away to make it feel really peaceful. It was great to have our own kitchen. Wonderful place to stay, we'd definitely recommend it!

“Would stay here again”

We were so happy to have chosen this hotel! The staff was great and kept the place up well. Talk to Angel at the front desk as he seems to know EVERYONE on Ambergris Caye and you won't be disappointed with anything he sets up for you. We did scuba, Lamanai tour, snorkeling, sea Kayaking (free) and hiking all starting from this hotel. The swim up bar was definitely a plus and all of the bartenders were a lot of fun. There are literally hammocks between palm trees right by the beach in front of this hotel. If you like to cook then the kitchen's were equipped with everything we needed to eat in when we wanted and the rooms are very spacious so you don't even feel like you are in a room but rather in an apartment! The water situation was the only concern (everyone must drink bottled water provided by the hotel, but this is everywhere in Ambergris so be prepared). The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Housekeeping even did our dishes every day! It was a great vacation!

Area recommendations
Walk down south on the beach to find many great restaurants and bars. San Pedro is a lot of fun for shopping and for some great restaurants.
When to go
Early June was great for rates as well as weather. A little rain in the morning and at night sometimes, but other than this - fantastic 'hot' weather.
Getting there
We flew in on Tropic Air. It was a quick flight and they do a good job. The ferry takes way, way too long and you may be sitting inside where it is hot and muggy. Wouldn't recommend it for that reason.
Getting around
The water taxi is cheap so do that to head into town unless you like a 4 mile walk (we did that once too). You can even get a pass for the time you are there. We rented a golf cart for a day and explored up and down the Caye.
What to pack
unless you tan well, pack lots of sunscreen (the waterproof kind). Went through almost 2 bottles of the stuff for 2 people in 7 days. there is sand everywhere around the hotel so you are better off with sandals. Shorts and light shirts work for most days and nights too.
Dining
Try Capricorn! The food was fantastic. Probably the best meal we ate the whole time.

“Great Value on Ambergris...”

Great. And having a full kitchen (including toaster/blender/pots/pans) was a plus since we had kids, and weren't up for a restaurant for EVERY meal. Staff for the most part is outstanding minus a bartender we didn't care for and had to complain, but management was quick to address our concerns. The pool/bar is great. Also, since you have use of the pool next door (water slide & diving rocks), the kids were happy. The restaurant is ok, & the store that delivers groceries is quick, friendly, and has a great selection (although they are by no means cheap). Location-wise, it's pretty much what you;d expect from San Pedro. The resorts are accesible via water taxi or gold cart. We chose the boat because, well, we were in Belize. The unlimited water taxi voucher is a great value. Tuff Enuff is the resort's excursion company and honestly, they get probably a C grade. The people are mostly very friendly and informative, but their variety of trips was so-so, and even when they had nothing booked, they didn't seem open to going to different snorkelling locations for instance. Also, there are no trips there that include sightseeing, lunch, or drinks. In contrast, Captain Morgan's had tons of excursions, and their trips included beer, water, sodas, rum punch, and stops for lunch and for shopping. BUT, I loved staying at Belizean Shores and the 5 minute beach walk to Captain Morgan's for trips beautiful. All in all, great. A perfect place to stay with the kids.

Area recommendations
Ambergris is great. Or, more low-key ( a LOT) is to stay on Caye Caulker and travel to Ambergris via boat once in a while.

“Excellent hotel service on a relaxing vacation”

We were very pleased with our hotel stay at Belizean Shores Resort. The room was clean and comfortable--comfortable bed, adequate kitchen ware for cooking, and the staff cleaned the room and replaced the beach towels daily. Our son loved the pool--there's an even more beautiful pool next door at the Coco resort, a sister hotel. The pool bartenders were friendly and helpful with advice. We found that the poolside drinks were not too expensive. We did two tours with Tuff-e-Nuff. Dave was a great guide for the half day snorkeling tour. We also traveled to the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich and went cave-tubing, both with Andre, a fantastically informative guide who takes pride in his country. We also used the Tuff-e-Nuff water taxi service and found the five day passes well worth the price. There were very few budget-priced restaurants near the resort, and the Belizean Shores restaurant was OK but not amazing. Also, the nearby pizza place has closed down. In town, the ceviche was good at Lily's Treasure Chest and Waruguma's. Waruguma's also has freshly made pupusas. We ate many of our meals in the room with groceries purchased beforehand at Mata Grande Grocery. Be sure to find Wine De Vine in town (south of the airport) and get some Belizean chocolate, named Kakow. Overall the stay was very relaxing and we felt taken care of. All the staff we had contact with were friendly and helpful; being met at the dock with drinks when we arrived was a nice touch.

“Didn't live up to the reviews. Would choose sister resort next time.”

Not what we had expected. The room was pleasant and clean, though dated and slightly shabby. On the positive side, we had a loft so that gave more space. The pool was nice, but pool bar was over-priced even for a pool bar. The restaurant was striving to be adequate. The beach front of the resort was kept clean, but it was pretty small and the adjacent areas were dirty and littered with debris. The tuff e nuff group that runs the snorkeling and other trips was over-priced relative to operations in town. The quality of the activity was highly variable, depending on the guide. One of the snorkel trips we took was fairly unprofessional, and bordered on dangerous for teenagers. The service at the resort office was unacceptable. There were few amenities in the room. Bring your own shampoos and soaps. Also don't look for daily coffee. They provided a single baggie of coffee on the first day (enough for 6 cup pot) and then refused to give anymore. Thankfully, there is a grocery store that delivers (Mata Grande). The resort is accessible by water taxi, which was not real convenient due to the frequency of the schedule. They said they rented out golf carts. We got one from sister resort because Belizean Shores had no more left. This cart was in terrible shape. We were afraid we weren't going to make it back from town and/or that it would be stolen because the key didn't fit in the ignition and there was no lock on it. Do yourselves a favor and look for another resort!

Area recommendations
Would recommend staying out of town, but expect to have to work around the limited selection of reasonable places to eat.
When to go
March was the perfect time to go to San Pedro Belize. The temperatures were wonderful and the trade winds made it perfect.
