“More than perfect”

It is my third visit to Germany, the first to Berlin, yet it was the best of the all. This is due to many factors the most important of which is the hotel I was residing at thanks to Expedia.

Area recommendations
Downtown as it is close to everything.
When to go
I think the month of September would be the best as the climate is quite appropriate during this time.

“Really one strong reason to go back to Berlin.”

Bla ha, bla ha.

Area recommendations
Three centers actually, which is somewhat unique for a capital (this is what a visitor should try to understand and experience)
Events and shows
Study availability over the internet before going there. Many offerings are booked out well before an actual visit!!

“Large modern commercial hotel in great location”

The sushi bar in the hotel is trendy with loud Euro-house music, but there are lots of good restaurants in the area (see Tripadvisor - we found a terrific Chinese place nearby) - don't need the 8E breakfast (a nice cafe - left out the front door, left at corner, right at Joachimstrasse, and then right at next block Cafe Pifi or something like it - it's closer than this sounds, 3 minute walk). The hotel itself is a big modern block - like a US Sheraton or similar - typical coverlets and 2 twin beds pushed together, no alarm clock (but you can get a wake up call), minibar, decent size closet, small shower with the plastic pouches of shampoo - you only get one for your stay regardless of the number of days. Location is fabulous - close to the zoo and the major West Berlin boulevard and tons of shopping, restaurants etc. Be aware that most of the charming smaller stores, restaurants and shops do not take credit cards. The hotel's exchange rates were only a couple of cents higher than the other exchanges on the street near the zoo. If you're coming in from the airport and want to save about 15E, take the 109 bus for 2.5E (buy ticket AB from the machine for one-way and validate it by pushing the ticket in a machine on the bus). Get off at Ulandstrasse stop (the buses have electronic signs that tell you the stop) - walk half a block along the same direction the bus was going on Kurfdamm and then make a right on Meinkestrassse. The hotel is about 2 blocks down on the left.

“Peaceful in Berlin”

The hotel was easy to find and within walking distance from the train station. We were greeted pleasurably, processed quickly, and the room was quiet and comfortable. There was ample space in the bathroom, and the mattresses were comfortable. The air conditioning was easy to regulate and worked properly. Overall, we had a very positive experience here.

Area recommendations
I would simply suggest planning your trip in advance or spend time with someone that knows the way around. It's easy to get around, but your time is better spent if you have a planned route.

“Great Location”

We did not realize breakfast was not included and reception staff explanation did not fully explain cost was per person, not for room with breakfast. Breakfast was very expensive and skimpy by German standards and poor quality--canned or frozen fruit, one small sweet selection, few breads, etc. Reception desk very helpful with tour info, contacting airline and answering questions. Air-conditioning was wonderful and room was comfortable.

Area recommendations
This was a great area right off the Ku'damm with U-Bahn stations, shopping, zoo and tours all easily within walking distance. Even cab from Hauptbahnhof and airport was reasonable. Without breakfast, this hotel would have been extremely well-priced.
Getting around
We walked to Ka De We and bought almost all of our take-home gifts in one stop. Tour busses also conveniently stopped at the corner a few blocks away and there were 2 U-Bahn stops within easy reach. The hop-on, hop-off was an easy way to visit many sites in a limited time. We took cabs to and from the Hauptbahnhof and Tegel which were cheaper than we expected.
Shopping
Ka De We had everything we needed to buy with one stop, but I also liked Karstadt which was even closer to the hotel, and just enjoyed meandering along the Ku'damm to see designer shops, etc.

“No frills, but a good home base”

The hotel was a basic place, with reasonable comfort and cleanliness. Note that the wireless internet was quite expensive and did not work in one of our 2 rooms. The location near the Zoo station is good. We took a bus to the hotel from the airport (20 minutes), and public transport connections around the city were excellent. There is a good neighborhood Italian restaurant on the same block. For inexpensive meals with lots of fresh vegetables, you cannot beat the Marche, a couple of blocks away on the Ku' damm.

Area recommendations
Berlin is not as vibrant as the guidebooks say. We stayed in the western portion, but spent most of our time in the eastern districts. There is not nearly the energy we felt in Munich, for example. Berlin has been beautifully rebuilt by a massive influx of tax money, but like Washington, DC it is a bit staid and the sidewalks seemed to roll up early. The museums are excellent, though.
Must see
You must go up in the Reichstag dome. Famously, Hitler used the burning of the Reichstag as a pretext for moving against Jews and Communists--but may have secretly arranged the setting of the fire. The old dome has been replaced with a stunning glass one, a call for transparency as well as a not-so-subtle reference to the infamous Kristallnacht! It has great views of the city and wonderful central mirrors that show a kaleidoscope of internal images. The Chinese pavilion at SanSouci in Potsdam is also something you should not miss. This is a wonderful, light-hearted 18th century fantasy of an imagined world.
