5 star living on a 2 star budget

Posted Sep 27, 2013 on Hotels.com
I am on a trip around the world traveling the London to Singapore segment by train. Hotel Comenius in “East” Berlin is the fourth stop of my journey. The location is good, about 900 meters from the train station, and 1 km from the Berlin Wall. The Victory Monument, Checkpoint Charlie, and most museums are about 5 km away. Hotel Comenius is the best hotel so far on this journey. The room I had looked like it should be on display in a furniture store. It was immaculate in every way, the highlight was the 10 foot floor to ceiling window overlooking a courtyard. I did not hear a sound all night long. This hotel has a wet sauna and even complementary q-tips in the bathroom. There are no cooking facilities in the room, but for 8 Euros they offer a breakfast buffet, the best of which I have seen so far on this round the world trip. It includes scrambled eggs, quiche, crepes, deli meats, pates, cheese including Brie, cereals, fruits, breads, juices, coffee and tea. As an added bonus, the lobby has a vending machine that sells 500 ml cold beer for $1.40! The staff are very polite and helpful. I rode my folding bike over 100 km during the 2 days I stayed at this hotel. The highlights were the park surrounding the Victory monument and Charlottenburg Palace. Previous Hotel – Au Royal Mad in Paris, France. Next Hotel - Ibis Warszawa Stare Miastro in Warsaw, Poland.

good low cost hotel

Nice, quiet small hotel. Reasonably well located in east Berlin. Staff friendly and spoke english fairly well. Good breakfast - lots of choice. Single room very small but clean and comfortable. Single room has shared bathroom oddly located in dining room area. Showers downstairs but very clean and new fixtures and fittings. About a ten minute walk to the u-bahn underground. Not alot of restaurants nearby, mostly cheap burger places and bars. About a 15 minute walk to the Berlin wall east gallery but most of Berlin's main attractions about 15 min u-bahn + s-bahn train ride away. Very reasonably priced. Recommended.

Good value for the price

I was really surprised having found such a clean accomodation in an overall very good condition at this price. The variety of the breakfast buffet was more than I had expected. Friendly staff gave me a warm welcome and good-bye.

Worse than a hostel or dorm room

Upon checkin, the gentleman who worked the front desk was rather rude, but since I had been traveling one day, I gave him the benefit of the doubt that I was judging him wrong. Not the case. When asked about the oppressive heat in our room, he just told us to open the windows, which, of course, we had already done. The oscillating fan that they provided did nothing but move hot air around, and because the hotel only has rooms on the top floor of a shared office building, it was pretty unbearable. Of course we didn't plan on spending too much time in our room, but the heat persisted late into the evening, and even after dark. We stayed one night, and when we went to check out the next day, he was rather rude once again. I would definitely recommend looking elsewhere if things like a tolerable room temperature and decent hotel staff are important to you.
