Period Hotel full of character

Posted Aug 1, 2014
Pros: The atmosphere and staff
Cons: Might be wotrth mentioning on websites that the restauarant is closed
Location: A short walk to Potsdamer Platz and from there to Checkpoint Charlie which is itself a bit pathetic but is surrounded by numerous fascinating sights.
As this was our first visit to Berlin we wanted to stay somewhere that felt like Berlin and this fitted the bill perfectly. The large chains are fine if you want familiarity but we can stay at home for that... The Hotel Altberlin is a quirky period property with genuine character. The Staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. The position may at first seems a little off the beaten track but, in practice, a large number of important tourist sites are within walking distance and the bus stop outside the front door will take you to to most of the remaining ones. We ate one meal in the restaurant which was excellent and, again , in character. The breakfast could keep you going for the day.

A hotel that is a little different.

Posted Jul 19, 2014
Pros: As it is quite old it has a lot of charm
Cons: Nothing
Location: Good location within walking distance to Potsdammer Platz and the Brandenburgh Gate
We chose this hotel because the location seemed very good and it was. If you come out of the hotel and turn right you are about a 10-15 minute walk from Potsdammer Platz which has a very nice area of restaurants, then another further 5-10 minute walk you can visit the Holocaust memorial and then the Brandenburgh Gate. If you come out of the hotel and walk left the area isn't quite so nice but there is a Turkish supermarket that sells lovely fruit and inside it's good for snacks and drinks etc. The hotel itself has a lot of charm and the room we had (122 ) was very large with 2 windows. But our friends next door (124 ) had a balcony with a table and 2 chairs on it, but was a smaller room. We were at the front of the hotel so it was a little noisy with traffic but we got used to it. The breakfast was outstanding, lovely food and so well presented. We would certainly go back

We were given Room 127.Nice but unfortunately the toilet seat is too close to the wash basin. No one is able to sit upright. The hotel management should move the wash basin so no one should sit sideway when one need the toilet. The receptionist understood our problem so we change to another room.

OLD FASHIONED BERLIN

Posted Jun 10, 2014
Pros: location# breakfast
Cons: control friendly barman
Location: too many
Have stayed twice before, with good revies, however this time we found the courtyard noisy at night ( no control, only a young girl at reception who could not leave) , room standard / layout poor,no coffee brew sachets and the 4 tea and two sugars were never replenished.Sunday night bar was closed. Still great location with a strip club now directly opposite

Fine Value

Hotel Altberlin is centrally a few blocks from Potzdamer Platz. The hotel is cozy and clean, the staff helpful, the rooms a bit small. The free breakfast was fabulous. It's a terrific value and recommended.

good location but small rooms

Posted May 13, 2014 on Hotels.com
Good service from the men on reception but the woman was unfriendly and unhelpful. Breakfast was a bit chaotic because no-one was in charge to organise seating etc. and on our 4-day stay they had plenty of fruit on 2 days and then nothing for the other 2! A very small bedroom with little storage space and noise from the nearby door. Good location but in a seedy part of town. The manager/waiter in the dining room was very nice, and helpful, and we ate in on one night and the food was good.

Go in good weather

Posted Mar 27, 2014
Pros: Patio, breakfast buffet, atmosphere
Cons: The beds
Overall I would come here again, although the room we ended up was not the best. The bar, breakfast area, and outdoor patio are all great. It rained while we were there so we did not get to enjoy the outdoor courtyard area but if you go in the nice weather I imagine it would be a great haven to relax, eat, and have a beer. Most of the rooms we peeked in looked good, but we were in the annex they call the garden house and our room was cold and the beds very saggy. The room size, view, bathroom, and everything else was just fine. The location was fine. About a 10 minute walk from Potzdamer Platz from which you could get anywhere. There is a casino and strip club on the same street, but it was not a big deal and we never felt intruded upon or unsafe. Overall a good bargain, but ask for a room in the main hotel.

Nice staff, excellent breakfast. Had previously stayed in one of the rooms that face the street and those can be quite noisy but this time I got one facing the courtyard and it was nice and quiet. Location is close to Potsdamer Platz (10 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride from the stop right outside the hotel).
