“Basic Place to Stay”

I guess this is a get what you pay for type of thing. The room was very small and only had a twin size bed. I arrived at 10 in the morning, and was not allowed to check in till 1PM after a transatlantic flight. Another hotel I stayed at twice in the past allowed me to check in at 10 am. There was a problem with the tub, the overflow vent was dry or something and it allowed the sewer gas to back-up into the bathroom. It stunk bad. There was no air conditioning so it made it difficult to sleep in the afternoon. The internet is about $7 extra. Breakfast is about $14. Crossing this place off my list of places to stay in Berlin.

“Decent hotel”

Everything was fine in this hotel. People very friendly, clean, good breakfast, no complaints. However for the cost the room was very small and spartan (and the windows could have been "see through" - my only complaint!). Comparing the costs between this hotel and others, we staye in Junior Suites in big hotels that cost little more than a room with barely space to move in. Otherwise the hotel was perfect if you do not mind walking a bit or taking the bus (in front of the hotel).

Area recommendations

This neighborhood is within walking distance of shopping. A bit closer (Kurfuerstendam) may be better but much more expensive (at times)

“Wonderful Experience”

The Hotel Sylter Hof Berlin is located a short walk from the Zoo bahnhof and right on the 100 bus line. So you can easily get to wherever your going in Berlin. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room was quite comfortable and very clean. I would stay here again.

Area recommendations

Berlin has so much to see. Most sights are in the Mitte district.

“Austere, but practical and clean”

Berlin is such a big city, that a hotel that is near the train/metro station such as this one, is pretty much the key to go around. It is near the zoo, so I managed to see the famous Knut polar bear. There are several restaurants in the area, not great ones, but interesting ones. There is also a fancy department store and a second-hand clothing store within walking distance. As for the employees, they tried to be helpful, but were not too successful: i.e., I asked for directions for a laundromat, but I couldn't find it, and apparently, it was pretty far from the metro station where they told me to get off.

“Very good hotel, friendly staff, excellent - but expensive - breakfast buffet.”

Hotel Sylter Hof is a modern hotel in a neighborhood of newer buildings a ten minute walk from the Europa Center near the center of former West Berlin. The hotel is very modern and very well furnished, maintained and managed. My single room was small but comfortable with a full bath with shower and all high quality fixtures. Breakfast was somewhat expensive but with an extensive european and American food selection to choose from, including an assortment of tea and very good and unlimited coffee. They had an assortment of free German only news papers to read over breakfast and take along afterwards.

Area recommendations

I used to live and work in Berlin and am familiar with the area around the center of former West Germany (the area near the Europa Center). Travelers without cars would probably find this neighborhood the best in which to find a hotel - there are many good ones within a 15 minute walk of the Europa Center. Travelers with cars or who are ok with using the bus may be satisfied with good, not necessarily less expensive, hotels located further away.

Traveler's tip

Business travelers would perhaps be better off in larger hotels which usually offer internet access, small conference rooms, and other business oriented facilities. My visit to Berlin this time wasn't business related and therefore I had no reason to determine what business related functions the Sylter Hof offered. However, my impression was that the hotel seemed oriented to tourists and tour groups.

“excellent location but NO airconditioner”

Truly an excellent location blocks from the KADEWE and Ku'damm for shopping galore. Pleasant short walk to the Tiergarten. Right across hotel there is an excellent little market(for water and snacks), and great bus line right outside of hotel...but I wish they'd mentioned that there would be no airconditioning due to remodelling during the time I would be there. It will be an even better hotel once the remodelling is done and airconditioning is working again!

Traveler's tip

Cross over to Plus(small market)where you can get your water, snacks(great chocolates and cookies), and beer for much much cheaper than your hotel minibar!

“good value for your money”

Hotel was nicely situated and close to e.g. a nice Vietanamese restaurant with great service. The room was big and the bed was comfy (I'm very picky with beds and they have to be soft enough). Pretty small bathroom though and there was something wrong with our bathroom door so it wouldn't close without a loud bang. We were too tired to complain since we only stayed there two nights and basically only came to the room to sleep. Hotel was very quiet even though they were renovating the lobby. An ok place that I recommend for those who need a nice, clean and quiet place to stay close to everything and for a reasonable price.
