Built from the ground up, the modern six-story building has a sleek golden matte metal façade and is affectionately called the “golden cage.” The entrance is a work of art by local graffiti artist GYF5 and evokes both the decadence of Mitte during the communist era, as well as the area’s current creative revival. Inside, there is an ongoing play of contrasts - serious and yet whimsical through the choice of colors and materials. In the lobby, oversized couches and chairs (think Alice in Wonderland!) covered in soft luxurious felt are inviting to the touch, and provide the perfect setting to linger and relax over a glass of wine or a latte. The large space is flanked by tall support columns dressed with grey padding that are interlaced with oversized white laces, suggesting a woman’s corset, another whimsical design element. Rectangular panels in olive green, beige, chocolate brown and grey cover the walls, adding warmth and modernity to the space.
A rooftop area provides a bird’s eye view of the area’s rooftops and of the surrounding city. The design also features a Beautyspa where guests can enjoy massages and cosmetic treatments overlooking Berlin. The elevator ride leading up to the guestrooms is a fun, visually entertaining experience – the elevator cage, made of clear glass on two sides, allows guests to contemplate colorful wall paintings by local street artists, each with a distinctive theme on every floor.
