The national capital Thimphu is situated 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of Bhutan, while Kathmandu Valley lies 310 miles (499 kilometers) to the west.

Two of the better known of these around the city are Jigme Dorji National Park and Royal Manas National Park. Retrace the triumphant and turbulent times of the region in Bhutan by exploring some of wonderfully preserved local historic sites. Spend an afternoon at the Drukgyel Dzong, the Memorial Chorten and the Bhutan Gate, which are among the more important heritage sites in the region.

If you like to visit the ghosts of the past, plan a day at the Textile Museum and the Bhutan National Museum, two of the most visited museums in Bhutan. Follow a local guide or take a self-guided tour, study the collections or simply savor the contemplative stillness.

There’s no nicer way to learn about the famous people who helped shape Bhutan than to visit its beautifully preserved palace. Spend a morning at historic Dechencholing Palace, where the upper echelons of Bhutan society once entertained their guests.

Beautiful Clock Tower Square is the perfect place to relax and feel the pulse of Bhutan. Bring that someone special and turn off your phone, this little patch of Bhutan is the place to unwind for a sweet hour or two.

Coronation Park is among the most photographed parks and gardens around the city. Bring a picnic, take a few photos, or just relax in the shade. This park is the perfect match for all moods and seasons.

Once you’ve checked out all the main spots on the Bhutan tourist trail, be sure to visit a few of these lesser known, but equally rewarding sights. The Punakha Dzong, The Kyichu Lhakhang, the Trongsa Dzong and the Buddha Dordenma worth visiting if you have a few hours to spare.
