“It was above Okay.”
You can tell it had been upgraded, but it met the needs I had as a business trip. I enjoyed my visit but everyone I told where I was staying and they said to be careful not to venture out from the area that the hotels were positioned in just off of the interstate for it was a high crime area.
“Stay overnight for an early flight”
Needed a place to stay for an early flight. Felt comfortable in the hotel and parking lots. Left the car parked for $5 per day with the shuttle ride. Can't beat that. Overall it was as expected. Nothing special, but not horrible.
“A bit surreal....not in a good way....”
When I arrived at the hotel the person at the desk was delightful. She was very engaging and seem to really enjoy her job. The condition of the hotel itself was not good. There were holes in some of the doors where they looked like they were doing repairs and then did not finish. The carpet was old, and I felt like I needed to wear full shoes, not just flip-flops. The kicker was, after being in the room for an hour, all of the sudden the ceiling in the bathroom caved in and water was poring out. The staff immediately switched my room, but did not offer any condolences other than an apology. They booked me into a courtyard room with a view of a pool with a couple of feet of dirty, nasty water. With a closer look, I realized there was a man working in it at ten o'clock at night. It was very surreal. I used to live/work in Birmingham so I know that the hotels by the airport are not the best, but this adventure gave me the willies.
“NOT a 3 Star hotel!”
The front desk clerk was very pleasant but she checked me into a room that she had just assigned to the couple in front of me. When I went to my room I turned the corner to find the couple who just checked in unloading the cart into the room I was just assigned. When I went back to the desk the gal said she was only as good as her computer... The other couple was still at the counter when she started to check me in. I can not imagine she has such a short term memory... She then reassigned me to my new room. It was nearly 10pm when we checked in. I was floored at how bad my room was! The paint on the door was clearly scratched off by a dog, the door was hung so poorly on the hinges that I could see the hallway when the door was closed. The 'flip-lock' above the handle was falling off the frame and the screws were stripped and falling out of the frame. The air conditioning unit looked like it was falling off the wall, there was a patch of ceiling that looked like it was about to fall onto the floor, and the sheets were barely on the bed. The room should never have been in the 'rental pool'! I WOULD NOT recommend the hotel!
“NOT AGAIN”
First I like to say the staff of the hotel was very friendly and helpful but, the conditions of the hotel was a complete mess. after check in the heater in the room start to smoke firer alarm went off, tried to call for help the phones did not work. Move to another room the linen and duve cover on the beds had stains. the phone did not work in the new room the fan in bathroom did not work made bathroom too hot while taking shower. No place to eat diner closed. I wish we had the funds to move to another hotel. This experience made my moms birthday get away not at all what I had planned. I am soo disappointed
“More like a 1 Star”
Avoid this place. Poorly maintained, police cars outside, loud bar.
“I should have listened to the previous posts”
Just the facts: (1) Only one person maned the front desk (it wasn't the emloyees fault it took 15 minutes to check in - too much for one person) (2) The toilet flooded in the first room, had to be moved to a second (another 15 minutes at the desk. (3) Slow shuttle service from airport to hotel - got frustrated and just paid a cab (same price as usual tip). (4) Friendly staff that appeared to be doing everything possible to help their customers, it is just a Clarion problem. (5) Not a safe area of Birmingham, I was told there was a security officer but I never saw him. Conclusion: I suggest staying at the Sheraton that is about 5mi from airport. Better shuttle service, better safety, plenty of staff all for only a few bucks more. This was my last stay at a Clarion (one other marginal experience a couple of years ago in another city).
“Poor condition, old rooms, smoking smell”
Overall, the hotel with 3-star rating is not adequate for this particular place.
“Nice Room Poor Staff & Upkeep”
Nice rooms, Old Hotel poorly staffed
“Too Many Problems”
The first room we were given was already being occupied and then we were told they were over booked and did not have a room. After a 20 minute wait we were given a room with a king size bed. There were three of us and we were to have two double beds. After another 20 minutes or so we were sent to a third room that did not have a coffee pot. This was also promptly remedied. We ate in the hotel restaurant and they did not have our first three choices as they were out of those items. We felt is was a little strange to be out of so many items on a Friday evening when they were completly booked for the weekend. We heard that they were out of even more items by Saturday night. We were there three mornings and the breakfast buffet was always out of the hot items and coffee. The final problem was Sunday evening when we returned to the hotel and none of our keys would work. We went to the front desk and they re-set our keys, but they still did not work. We went back to the lobby and they tried again, but the keys still would not work so an employee used her pass key to let us in our room and suggested that if we left for breadfast the next morning we should have a maid let us back in. I do want to mention that all of the employees were very nice, friendly and helpful. It was just that there were so many problems you could not feel good about recommending this hotel to anyone.
