Fun and visually pleasing hotel

Posted Aug 1, 2015
Pros: Modern design of rooms, patio where food and drinks are available. Friendly staff. Quiet location.
Cons: More parking.
Location: We had a rental car and drove over to the Basque Block and restaurants. It would have been walkable as well.
The hotel was funky and fun, staff were very friendly and attentive and the onsite bar and patio definitely add to our great experience at this hotel.

Remodeled older small hotel in downtown Boise

Posted Jul 27, 2015
Nice location for walking to shopping and restaurants. Good bar and food menu. According to the website, our stay was supposed to include a continental breakfast. However, upon arrival, we were told that was only for Monday through Thursday. Since we were staying the weekend, we didn't get any breakfast. And the website didn't say there was a limitation on the days breakfast was served. Also, when I checked in, I was told that my debit card would be pre-authorized for "incidentals", even though I had already paid for the room. They ended up placing a $250 hold on my debit card, which I've never he happen before. When I brought it to their attention, they said it should only have been a $50 hold and would remove it. However, three days later the $250 hold is still on there.

"Pet friendly" but does NOT accept cats.

Posted Jul 22, 2015
My husband and I booked a room at the Modern Hotel and Bar in Boise as part of our cross country move (Nashville, TN to Portland, OR). We were excited because we saw that the hotel was pet friendly, as we would be bringing our cat with us on the trip. We called to confirm that they accepted pets before booking. After driving 8+ hours, we arrived only to be told that they do NOT accept cats, only dogs. The front desk clerk called the manager to see if there was any way to accommodate us but was told no, they absolutely cannot allow cats. The manager was kind enough to transfer us to the cat (and dog)-friendly Safari Inn just down the street for no charge. However, the new hotel was considerably less expensive than what we had already paid to stay at the Modern Hotel and Bar. So, while we were happy to not be on the streets with our cat, we felt that we got the short end of the stick and the Modern Hotel and Bar ended up making money on what was, I believe, their mistake (since no one told us when we called that they do not accept cats, and it isn't printed any where on their website). We did end up walking back to the Modern Hotel and Bar to have dinner and drinks and both were delicious. It's just unfortunate that they didn't attempt to help make up for the fact that we lost money in the hotel transfer. The bottom line is: this hotel does not accept cats! Beware!

Unexpected Pleasures in Boise, Idaho

Posted Jul 20, 2015
Location: Boise Art Glass, Crazy Neighbor, Ming Studios, Bricolage (Handmade Items), Flying M Cafe, Neurolux Bar, Boise Art Museum, Atomic Treasures
Okay, I'm a snotty New Yorker: guilty as charged. The Modern Hotel in Boise, however, was a refreshingly hip hotel and bar in an unexpectedly hip town. Obviously, someone had the genius idea to take a pretty dour property, put some thoughtful design thinking into the project, and come up with a completely new contemporary hotel. The hotel design was at once playful and sophisticated. Really loved it. However . . . if they really want to improve the rooms they need to add some extra clothing storage in the bedroom area and some extra towel hooks in the bathroom. I suspect that a bachelor designed this room and, while made some very good aesthetic choices, didn't make very practical decisions. There are two queen size beds in the room, so two to four people will probably use the room: it needs the comparable conveniences. Besides these small nit-picky critiques, I would definitely suggest this hotel for those visiting Boise.

Loved the bikes when they worked. Staff were awesome. Rooms were a little tired. Could use a cost of paint and a bit of a freshen up.

Small and sweet

A former motel turned into a nice hotel. As a guest you can borrow a bicycle for 4 hours, at no charge. Not far from downtown and blocks the river, in the linen district. Was perfect for an overnight stay for a wedding.

Only good thing was the price

Posted Jul 6, 2015
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Parking situation, lighting, door closures (they are incredibly noisy)
I don't quite understand why this hotel was so highly rated. It is not in a good location, there is very limited parking (we had to leave our vehicle a couple blocks away on a busy street overnight), the room was small and dark, the hallways were narrow and even darker, and it was very noisy. Yes, the price was good, but that's the only thing it had going. Perhaps if someone just needs a hotel for one night with an early departure (before the doors start slamming!) this would be OK, otherwise I would not recommend it.
