“great find in Boston”

The College Club was the only hotel in central Boston with a room available when we booked rather late for Labor Day weekend. To our surprise it was clean, the room extra large and airy, with a distinct New England atmosphere, the king-size bed very comfortable, reception a bit casual but efficient, breakfast (included in the price) adequate. Once the code to enter after hours was sorted out after a quick phone call, we found the hotel to be just what we wanted, with easy access on foot to restaurants and cafes, shops, Boston Common, Beacon Hill. We would return there any time.

Area recommendations
The area around Commonwealth Ave. and Newbury St. is good for anyone who likes walking and exploring, and Boston is a great walking city. In addition, there are a number of good cafes and restaurants in the area as well as boutiques, department stores, book shops. For those needing to get to the airport: a taxi ride costs about $25.

“Great location, very affordable option”

I was looking for an affordable room in a good neighborhood and stumbled on this very quaint, comfy bed and breakfast right down the street from the Public Gardens! Unfortunately I arrived late at night, but I would come back in a minute to enjoy nicely furnished accommodations, walkable to the T, Newbury Street, great dining and historic sites!

Area recommendations
Back Bay -- great dining and shopping options, lots of history and very walkable.

“Beautiful, historical property, in unbeatable location”

I loved my stay here. It's not really a hotel, and not really a B&B -- it's a serene, beautiful old house in a great neighborhood, where you can rent a spacious, antiques-furnished room and get an authentic taste of how the upper-crust lived in 19th-century Boston. It's clearly not for everyone, but if fitness rooms, lobby bars, chocolates on the pillow, etc. aren't important to you, I'd give it a try.

“very good location”

Very good location. Hotel is nice and charming. But the staff was not very welcoming and not very helpful. Lady from the front desk was very rude to me. The breakfast room was not cleaned enough quickly between two guests, I had to clean my table.

“Suprises at the City Club of Boston”

The City Club of Boston is located in a mdi-block Italianate style townhouse on Commonwealth Avenue, the most prestigious aveneu in Back Bay of Boston. The building has seen better days and, as they say, has the patina of age, including peeling paint in the small interior lightwell in the center of the house. Beware that the B&B manager leaves at 6:30 p.m. and leaves your key in an envleope on the front table which, of course, is inaccessible because of the locked front door should you perchance arrive after 6:30. Beware also that the continental breakfast does not commence until 7:45 a.m. which, if you must be up and about before then, leaves you withou breakfast. Also, there were no cookies in the evening when I arrived. My room was the smallest in the house on the top floor facing the alley. Its location, fortunately, was quieter than the better rooms facing the avenue. Although it was small, it was relatively clean. Unfortunately, the window shutters were rendered inoperable because of a modern draper rod. The result was morning light coming through the translucent blinds, which is not conducive to prolonged slumber. The bed was twin-sized, which posed a challenge as I am 6'-4" tall. The hall bathroom was nicely renovated and was clean, with a curious casement window opening into a rather seedy lightwell. The bathroom was clean with an excellent shower having a showerhead high in the wall, providing an excellent flow of water over my head.

Area recommendations
Back Bay because it is the residential heart of Boston and is quite convenient to all areas of the city.
When to go
I went at the end of February. Parking is a problem in winter because the snow is piled along the curbs. When I was there most of it had melted and I was able to find parking spots. The best times to go are in the fall and in May.
Getting there
If you fly into Boston, there are convenient subway connections. There are also taxis for the less-adventurous and better-heeled. Taxis are not as convenient as those in New York City. Rental cars are available, as well, but parking can be challenging, although not nearly as dificult as in other large cities.
Getting around
There is an excellent subway system that can take you typically within an easy walk of most places. I recommend the subway highly. I do not recommend driving and parking in Boston unless one is relatively familiar with the city. The streets are narrow and winding in the older sections of the city with numerous one-way streets.
What to pack
Pack for the weather. Winter in Boston begins in early November and lasts until early May. Although it is not overally cold, it does get quite a lot of snow, so be prepared for snow. Summers are generally pleasant, although there is usually periods of hot weather, but not prolonged.
Must see
Boston is a treasure-trove of history. The Freedom Trail is an excellent place to start. There is also a wealth of architecture. The Old State House, (current) State House, Quincy Market, Copley Square, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Boston Commons, Public Garden, Newbury Street (for shopping), the North End, Charlestown, USS Constitution, Bunker Hill Monument, Museum of Fine Arts, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Massachusetts Avenue in Carmbridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and Fenway Park are all excellent to visit. Most visitors avoid the Combat Zone (Red Light Distrcit) and the South End.
Shopping
Newbury Street in the Back Bay is Boston's counterpart to New York City's Fifth Avenue. In addition to upscale stores such as may be found in major cities, there are also local stores of excellent quality.
Dining
Boston is best known for its seafood and there are numerous seafood restaurants such as Legal Seafood which are unsurpassed. Hotel dining tends to be overpriced, although more convenient. If you are looking for Boston Baked Beans, your search will be futile. Also, Boston Cream Pie is relatively uncommon. Stick with the seafood and you will not go amiss.
Family-friendly activities
The Science Museum of Boston is probably the most family-friendly activity, It has lots of fun an interactive things for children. Younger children might find the historic sites and museums boring, but older children may find them enjoyable. The National Park Service has excellent interpreters at their various sites.
Nightlife
As in Philadelphia, nightlife in Boston tends to be private and conservative - except in the Combat Zone (red light district) which is not recommended. The Symphony is quite excellent during its season and there are cultural events at Harvard and MIT.

“Aside from check-in drama, fabulous!”

The hotel is lovely. I had a single room with a share bathroom. I was sharing with only one other person, so it was not a big problem. We only clashed once! The bedroom and bathroom were both beautifully appointed and the whole hotel gives a very homely, cozy feel. It is well-serviced, rooms are clean and well-kept. Breakfast is available everyday from 7.45, although if you need to eat earlier you can access food before then. Snacks, tea and coffee are available around the clock. The food is good. The hotel is extremely well-located and has affordable rates for its location. Aside from the check-in hassle, it was an extremely pleasant stay and I would go back in a heartbeat. In fact, I intend to make it my hotel of preference any time I am in Boston.

“Quaint B&B”

If you're expecting a "hotel", you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a quaint B&B you'll find this multi-women's-college alumni clubhouse a great deal and great place to stay. It's been recently renovated, but still has the old-money genteel feel you expect from its genre. There are only 11 rooms (either doubles with ensuite baths or singles with shared baths). I took the latter, which was small, but comfortable enough for my business trip. The room was well-cooled even though Boston was in the grip of an oppressive heatwave. Downstairs, there is a common room with breakfast (and afternoon/evening cookies, tea, and coffee). It's only a block from the public gardens if you fancy taking a spin on the duck boats. All in all, I'd happily stay there again if traveling alone.

Area recommendations
The College Club is in the BackBay one block from the tony Newbury Street shopping district. It's only about a mile or so to MIT and less than 2 miles to Harvard Square. The public gardens and Boston Commons are only a couple of blocks away. Chinatown is about a 10-15 minute walk. Any of those places are worthwhile to see and experience.

“A Boston pearl!”

Very nice and cozy little hotel/B&B situated in a central location next to Boston Common. 2 minutes walk to the subway station and Newbury Street. I stayed at the Vassar room in 4th. floor, with a lovely interior and a magnificent wiev to Commonwealth Ave. A big double room with a very nice bath. Free coffee and homemade cookies available all day and complementary breakfast. I want to invite my husband back with me for our next US visit!! I was "ashstuck" in the US after the Iceland vulcanic eruption and very concerned about my stay and fligths out from Boston. A very helpfull manager saved my day when my plane got cancelled AGAIN. Tahnks a lot.

“A real classic treasure in Boston”

The College club is the oldest women club in U.S.. The hotel is actually a big house. Very classically decorated. I found books in my room with the copyright of 1893. The bed looks nice as well. The only inconvience might be the shared bathroom. Single room does not have its own bathroom, have to use the shared bathroom in the same floor. But other than that, everything is good. The neiborhood is one of the oldest in Boston: the commonwealth Avenue. The swan park is within 2 mintes of walk. Very nice environment.
