A place to stay on the way to OrkneyPosted Jun 23, 2013
Pros: Hands down, the nice members of staff.
Cons: The entire property desperately needs refurbishment.
Location: No particular sights to see nearby, but handy to stop on the way to the Orkney ferry.
We booked the Sutherland Inn as a place to stay as we were driving to Orkney as it's about half-way between Glasgow and the ferry at Gill's Bay- The general area is somewhat down at the heels, but not too bad. Our main problem was that the hotel has no on-premises parking, so you have to park your vehicle at a public parking across the road that is shared with the Co-op grocery store. As we had several items that we wanted to be able to leave in the car, it was worrying to have to leave things in an insecure, public area. The hotel itself has seen better days, with worn carpeting, old bathroom facilities, basically the furnishings all look about 50 years old. When we went down for breakfast the next morning, the pickings were slim. We hunted around and found some Weetabix, which we had with instant coffee and skim milk. Although the location is good as a half-way stop, we would not recommend the Sutherland Inn for a holiday destination. The best thing about the Inn is the staff, they are friendly and helpful; if the condition of the facilities were of the same standard as the staff's attitude, the place would be great.

A good choice for a stopover.Posted May 4, 2013
Cons: Standard of Room
My stay was only for a stopover en route to Orkney. The Inn has a good atmosphere with friendly staff. Room was as expected from an Inn with a small single room in a reasonable though not exceptional standard. This being said it is great value for money and if I was repeating the journey I would stay there again.

We've put that we'd recommend - and we would - IF you manage to get it at a bargain rate. In that case, for the money it was ok. If you pay full price, you might feel short changed. The bed was comfortable, we had a lovely quiet room - but the shower was only just clean, the shower head was poor - water squirted everywhere. You can replace these for a couple of pounds - and it should have been done. We found the bar expensive and we didn't eat our evening meal in the hotel - the breakfast was lovely though.

V good Inn, recommended.Posted Aug 20, 2012
Very friendly & helpful staff. Good food, excellent value for money. The only real downside is the noisy plumbing system.

Not much funPosted Jan 13, 2012
It's the little things that make the difference between pleasant and uninspiring. No bar of soap, just liquid. No biscuits in the room. Having to make your own tea at breakfast using a tea bag, or your own coffee from a sachet, rather than being offered a pot. Toasters that labour to produce even a couple of slices. A good example of how a reasonably priced hotel can be poor value.
