“Recommend with comments”

Front desk people always courteous and helpful, room was nicely furnished with a nice seating area and desk. The bed was comfortable, but I thought we were getting a double bed; we got two twins joined together, which doesn't always work for a couple. The main lobby is spacious and nice. There is a lovely patio out back. The room was very clean, but the bathroom, although clean, had an extremely narrow tub. The shower curtain extended 4 or 5 inches along the bottom of the tub, which meant it stayed wet, so the very bottom had black mold: this problem could easily be solved by shortening the curtain. There was shower gel provided, but the bars of soap were tiny and kept falling through the shower soap dish. The hotel description says it is right in the old city -- but it is really on the edge. While only a 5 to 15 minute walk, depending on what part you want to see, it meant that if you had bought stuff, you had to walk back to drop your bags if you didn't want to carry them through the museums or to dinner. This wouldn't be a problem for most people and the hotel was well run and nice. It is also a short taxi ride to the train station. You can walk it, but wheeling suitcases over cobblestones is an interesting experience. Bruges is wonderful - food, sites, charm, people. We definitely plan to return, but would look for a hotel in the middle of the city.

Area recommendations

Markt (central market square) is great for people watching, horse and buggy watching, while sitting at the many outdoor cafes Stadhuis (city hall) is spectacular, informative audio guides Boat ride along the canals - float by fairy tale turrets Groeningemuseum, Memlingmuseum and St. John's hospital - they give first-time Low Country visitors a good idea of the culture and phenomenal art, but are not huge. Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (church of Our Lady), all black and white interior, with a MIchaelangelo sculpture. Begijnhof, the neighborhood of homes for the women whose husbands/fiances did not return from the crusades: a bucolic neighborhood close to the center of the old city and near the park reserved for the swans. Excellent restaurant: Cambrinus Bierbrasserie, whether you like beer or not. Most of the entrees are cooked with or in beer, but don't actually taste like beer, just excellent. It is just off the Markt and is always busy. Belgian waffles available everywhere, thank goodness!

When to go

June was very nice, but pack sweaters - it is, after all, northern Europe (we arrived from 97 degree Washington DC); temperatures were mostly in the 60s, sometimes low 70s and there was not a lot of constant sun. With a cardigan or even wool shawl, you would still be comfortable eating dinner outside. We were there the 3rd week in June, so the longest days of the year - it was still light at 10 pm. This is a bit disorienting at first, but very nice.

“Very Good Location”

It is a very nice hotel. The rooms are clean and has enough space. The bathroom for an American will look estrange due to the Bathtub does not have curtain neither door; therefore, to take a shower can be complicated in order to do not water the all bathroom..

Area recommendations

If you are planning to stay just one night in the city try to get there early in the morning..Most sites close early in the afternoon during March.
