Good hotel, bad location

Posted Apr 1, 2013
The hotel is very nice, clean and comfortable but unfortunately it`s location is quite bad as you will need to take two trains to get to the city center.

no local amenities, rather remote and run down.

Check in was slow. Hotel is near the sportarena. A number of guests were there for an event that night yet no food available after ten, when many were returning from the event. No decent restaurants around, only a burger king.

Not exactly romantic but a good value

Pros: Great breakfast with lots of selection!
Cons: Getting there from the city center isn't always convenient.
Location: Located along a somewhat dirty, nondescript road in a mostly residential neighborhood.
This hotel was a great value for our one-night stay: the staff were friendly, the room was clean, and the breakfast was fantastic. The only downside for us was that it's a bit out of the way: from the main train station (which itself is not really central) you have to ride the subway one stop and then a (usually crowded) tram for 2 stops. That's not too far, but considering that the transit ticket machines in Budapest are frequently broken, which in turn means that you have to stand in a long line to buy tickets, the journey can be pain in the butt. Walking instead of taking the tram is possible, but the walk is along a pretty smoggy, crowded road. The neighborhood is not awesome, e.g. we passed a guy sniffing glue from a bag on our way to the station -- but urban poverty is just a part of Budapest as the pretty buildings, and we didn't expect squeaky-clean environs. We felt safe there, in any case. We found one nice restaurant nearby -- the Ypsilon Cafe -- other than that, you probably have to ride downtown to go out to eat. There is also a grocery store nearby.

Was better when I first stayed

Posted Jun 14, 2011 on Hotels.com
I stayed at this hotel in early December and enjoyed it so much that I decided to book it again during my trip to Budapest the first week of June. I am uncertain what happened between December and June, but for some reason, the quality of service has significantly decreased since my first stay in December. During my first stay, I received a free breakfast, I was assisted with baggage, I was not overcharged for the minibar, and I payed less (granted it was the off-season). However, this June, all has changed. I originally booked the hotel for 3 nights and later decided I wanted to stay 6. I attempted to simply change the reservation, but when I called, they said such things are impossible, so I cancelled the 3 day and booked a 6 day instead. Upon arrival, the lady at the front desk informed me that I would still have to pay for the 3 nights IN ADDITION to my six nights because they do not allow cancellations (even though I cancelled BEFORE the date they posted for cancellations). Thank god for hotels.com, because they already refunded my 3 night stay, so I did not have to pay the extra amount. The front desk lady was upset and angry after she called hotels.com to attempt to charge me and was told she could not. The staff upon arrival was surly and impolite, completely unhelpful, and welcomed me with what appeared to be disdain. I had my fiancee with me (who is immigrating to the states) and so we had a lot of bags. I asked for some assistance in carrying our luggage in and was simply pointed in the general direction of some carts that I can use. The breakfast, I was told, is now 10 Euros, per person, every morning, so I told them to stuff that and went to a grocery down the road where I bought pastries for breakfast at less than 2 Euros (around 500-600 forint) for the 2 of us. The rooms are still clean and comfortable, but the price of everything in the minibar has doubled. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is not exactly the best place in Budapest either, but it is close to public transport which can get you anywhere within 20 minutes. Basically, I am simply disappointed in the drop of service quality. I LOVED this hotel in December, but for some unknown reason, they have become a tourist trap with poor service and an overinflated price (and ego).
