Fantastic Experience

Posted May 30, 2014
Excellent and very superb staff. All friendly and very helpful from the door man to the reservations desk to the lady for the hotel entrance to the Spa. Stayed the first night on fourth floor but asked for third floor the last two nights and all good. They need to seal the toilets as sewage smell was wafting in so for sure they either need a wax gasket or lots of silicone. Our toilet was loose hence the sewage smell.

Dear Alberta, We thank you for sharing your experiences on Expedia regarding your recent stay in our hotel with other travellers. Than you for having chosen us. We appreciate your kind comments on our staff "Excellent and very superb staff...all friendly and very helpful from the doorman to the reservations desk ". Unfortunately some of our bathrooms are getting old, there is continous effort from the maids/housekeeping to eliminate sewage smell. We thank you for your visit and for the comments. Sincerely, Mihaly Vasony Guest Relations Manager

Great location. Hotel was once fabulous.

Posted May 18, 2014
Pros: The proximity to the old styled bath & the food was faultless
Cons: Investment to return it to its former glory however I accept that would then take it out of our budget.
Location: Great location right by the river. Good views & close enough to walk or to get the plentiful transport. If driving the hotel is easy to find.
The hotel has seen better days. The reception area showed the elegance of times gone by. Entering the wonderful old styled Spa from the 2nd floor was an experience that made it worth staying at the hotel. The location was very good right next to a hop on hope off bust stop. The food in the restaurant was top class & excellent with good old styled entertainment. The everyday cleaning was ok, things like dead fly's inside the lampshade & past there best net curtains. Dated 70s bathroom but it all worked & we did sleep well.

Grand Old Hotel

Posted May 13, 2014
Pros: The location, the breakfast. Free Wi-Fi in the lobby.
Cons: The halls need painting and new carpets. The front desk is also the Concierge desk and sometimes you have to wait to get your key.
Location: Great location. Gellert hill beside the hotel. You can climb up to see monument. The cave church is there also. The Market Hall across the bridge.
This hotel was once the best hotel in Budapest and is situated in a great location, with a short walk across the Liberty bridge you are in Pest at the Market Hall and close to Vaci Utca the pedestrian street for tourists. The spa is a separately run part of the hotel and magnificent and well maintained. The hotel needs renovating and the rooms are not all good. We had to change rooms twice to get what we wanted. The staff was very helpful. The breakfast is great and included. The breads and sweets are fantastic. I would recommend this hotel to someone who appreciates the old European buildings but it is not perfect. There is a fantastic restaurant just outside of the hotel to the right called Szeged. It is true Hungarian food and excellent with gypsy music and folk dancing at night.

Dear J, We thank you for having chosen our Danubius GELLÉRT hotel for your vacation and for taking the time for a very kind comment on your Budapest stay. We are pleased to learn you were impressed with our location with the staff "was very helpful...the breakfast is great and included ". Yes indeed everything is within walking distance :The Market Hall, the VÁCI /pedestrian/street the Gellért hill and the cave church .As we have really very different kind and type of old rooms we must accept your critics : "we had to change rooms twice to get what we wanted..." We do look forward to welcoming you again in our Gellért Hotel! With best regards, Mihaly Vasony Guest Relations Manager

Great Historic Hotel, Fantastic Baths

Posted May 12, 2014
Pros: Peaceful location on the Buda side of the City but very central as Transports are very good, with a special mention to the lovely yellow trams!!
Cons: The buffet breakfast is very good but could be better organised if greeted on arrival and a table allocated.
Location: The City is all yours from the location so I would not praise Budapest enough. As a quick advice , turn right and walk 5 mns to Haki or Hoki Bar.
If you are looking for fancy rooms which are all boringly similar The Gellert is not for you. But if you like authenticity , care to serve the customers, and a feeling of being part of 19th century Hungary, you must try the Gellert. With the fantastic addition of the Baths , first time for free and quite cheap for other visits, the Gellert is the place to stay at a sensible rate.

Faded grandeur

Posted May 7, 2014
Pros: The staff, the cleanliness
Cons: My room carpet could have done with replacing.
Location: On the Danube, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the nearby Buda hills, or walk across the bridge to Pest and the Great Market Hall.
I enjoyed a three night stay here. Single rooms are usually 'lesser' than doubles and this was no exception, but the hotel was very clean. Furnishings etc are in some places worn and very tired but the place has character and some spectacular features. Without exception all staff were incredibly, polite, helpful, efficient and in good humour, I have never felt so 'invited to stay' in a hotel before. The breakfast is plentiful and very varied. What a shame some guests chose to 'overindulge' (taking food out in napkins). Breakfast is a continuous, no limits buffet so there really is no need for this. The inclusive thermal baths experience is well worth a couple of hours.

Gellert Hotel

Posted May 7, 2014
Pros: Staff nice. We didn't use the spa so can't comment on that Good location
Cons: Rooms tired and basic
Location: Good location. Do visit the cave church right next door to the hotel and also the caves, complete with opera, underneath the Castle mound. Nice parks,
Nice hotel but no air conditioning. We had to have the window open all night which meant that we could hear the trams and occasional police siren. Rooms very tired but beds comfortable and clean. Good location with both tram and metro just near by

Fading Glory

Posted May 3, 2014 on Hotels.com
This was *the* place to stay 40 years ago when I last visited. I doubt the building has changed much since with the door locks, plumbing and electrical best described as "quaint". The "Telephone" shower was hard to use without getting water all over the bathroom as the shower curtain only covered 1/3 of the tub. The service, however, is very good, the included breakfast buffet excellent and a visit to the famous "Gellert Baths" is included in your room rate. Even if you don't feel like swimming, soaking or sun-bathing, a tour of the baths is a must-do when in Budapest. The location isn't very central being across the Szabatsag (Liberty) bridge from Pest but the streetcar service is frequent and there is great walking in the park on the mountain (hill() right beside the hotel.
