“A delightful stay”

I was very happy with the City Hotel Matyas, it is centrally located and in a nice neighborhood. The room was large spacious and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The TV contained several channels in a variety of languages, however it does not contain the ability to use the pay channels like MGM. The room did have a phone but it does not have a separate phone number all calls are directed through the front desk. There are charges for each phone call placed whether local or not. The check in time was earlier than stated which was nice. I do recommend the hotel as a nice place to stay as long as the prices stay reasonable. All in all I enjoyed my stay and definitely would stay there again, on my next trip to Budapest.

Area recommendations
The great market hall was a nice place for a snack and to pass some time looking at possible gifts. I definitely would recommend walking across the Elizabeth Bridge outside the hotel to the waterfall and the statue above. I spent two weeks in the city and still did not see everything that I planned to it has so much to offer just do your research and enjoy.
Getting around
Go to any of the metro stations and purchase a metro pass for the length of your stay, they come in a variety of lengths. If you're going to get one good for two weeks don't forgive to bring a small photo of yourself, the photo is required in order to purchase the 14 day pass they glue the photo of you on the pass in order to make it valid. So make sure your photo is one you like and one you do not mind being glued to your metro ID.
What to pack
A international outlet adapter with built and surge protector.
Events and shows
At the City Hotel Matyas there is a restaurant, that has a really exciting folklore show. Make reservations before you go, even before you leave on your trip would be best and check the schedule of the show's they change daily.

“It was o.k., could be better”

It was convenient, close to main places. Area was noisy, couldn't sleep that well. Some of the people at Front Desk (1 person) was not friendly. Breakfast Brunch was not that great. Not enough variety (warm foods, sweet rolls).

“Great Place”

The Hotel was nice, clean and the staff was helpfull. Very central and had a good price booking trough expedia package. I will suggest to everyone to try it.

Area recommendations
I don`t recomand to do the trip to S. Andrea becouse was not so nice, little town with lots of shops and nothing else. The cruise back was bad. The drop on and off bus to suggest is the orange one that also offer a cruise on the river and the ticket can be cheap if you buy it at the hotel reception. I got a discount.

“Fantastic location and very good value for money”

This hotel offers a great location for accessing all the major sights and is also very close to a metro station. The rooms are basic but clean, and very well sound-proofed. I will definitely stay there again; great rates for what you get.

If you are looking for a good hotel with a great location for an excellent price, this is it! Matyas Hotel is located right to the subway station (2 blocks), and almost in front of the river and the tram station. Tha staff is really friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and clean. Just enough for having a nice days in the city. I would definitely return to Matyas Hotel and recommend it to my friends.

“Good location, great (Winter) deal!”

Very clean room, got a great deal through Expedia (excluding breakfast). City Panzio Mathyas is a three star hotel, plenty of shops/restaurants and transport nearby, perfect location. CAREFUL: Don't ask reception to book your cab to airport, the taxi driver will pay a fee to the person, a fee he will charge you. In my case, Ft. 1,000.

“old building, entrance was falling apart and very dark”

not planning to go back

Main monuments and plazas, most of Hungarian were very helpful and kind. Never buy online tickets for Budapest Opera House, if there is a mistake no way to cancel your purchase and get your money back.

“Clean, reasonably priced, centrally located hotel in Budapest”

This is a clean hotel, centrally located in a good neighborhood in Budapest. Within walking distance from many attractions. Breakfast was good and the staff spoke English and were friendly. Room was spacious, clean and quiet. Would stay there again. Budapest is a beautiful city and the people really make you feel comfortable and want you to enjoy yourself. We will go back again.

Dining
Go to Fatal restaurant for dinner. Great place, great food, great prices.

“good value for money”

When we arrived and saw the entrance and the hotel reception, i got really disapointed, looked depressing and the furnitures were old. The room was clean, spacious and bright, what more to ask?Actually, it was the most spacious hotel room that i have ever stayed. The stuff was really friendly and willing to help, most of them were speaking english, italian and spanish. The location was perfect, so close to everything. Don't expect much, it is not a luxury or modern hotel but it is a great, clean and decent place to stay. Moreover the adventure is out there!

Must see
Must visit a thermal bath, it is an undiscrible experience. Try a sauna and a hamam and enjoy the thermal baths with different deperatures. With an extra charge you can have a massage, it will loose your body and mind, try it! We had a great time, even my boyfriend.

“Good Budget Hotel”

The best things about this hotel were the gentlemen behind the front desk, the breakfast buffet, and free internet access. The personnel were very nice and helpful and the buffet was a good size with many selections: bread, granola, yogurt, sliced meats, cheeses, jam/butter, sausages, scrambled eggs, tea, milk, and a nice coffee/espresso machine. The building is old and could use better lighting at night in the hallways (but is shared with other residences and may not be able to?), but we had what we needed as far as beds to sleep in and warm showers. The bathrooms were nice. The rooms could be cleaner (specifically carpets) with working a/c that has cool air or at least an oscillating fan in the room. It was warm enough at night in August even with the window open that we sweat some while sleeping. The room we had should have been non-smoking, but there was still a strong smoke smell from somewhere inside. Good hotel for those on a budget, we would stay here again.

Area recommendations
The area where Matyas Hotel is located (on the Buda side) is very convenient for walking to nearby sites, jumping on the Metro (about 2 blocks away), and for taking a walk alongside the Danube River. There are also restaurants, grocery stores, and ATMs within short walking distance. The surrounding area of the hotel is not the nicest (seems a little dark and gloomy), but I think several areas of Budapest are like this. It didn't matter too much to us as we still felt safe and weren't in our hotel that much to need a pretty atmosphere anyhow, so it was fine.
Getting around
Walking and the Metro are the best ways to get around. If you are in Budapest for 3 or more days it is good to get the 3 day pass so you can hop on and off the subway, buses, and trams (I think trams are included too, can't remember). Or there is also the 24 day pass for shorter stays too. Be prepared for unfriendly service with little patience for questions!!! We were so amazed at this. No matter how polite or friendly we tried to be, most people working in any service industry (train/bus stations, restaurants, shops, tourist venues, etc.) seem like every day is a bad day for them and are not very interested in helping you if it takes longer than 10 seconds (esp. if you don't speak Hungarian)! The exceptions were one man at the ticket booth on Castle Hill (Fisherman's Bastion) and our hotel staff, which we were pleasantly surprised at. Thank you so much Hotel Matyas staff - it was very much appreciated :-) Excellent tip: greet workers with Servusz /SAIR-voose/ or Servusztok (for more than 1 person) as they seemed to appreciate that. Also, if you need to purchase train tickets to another city you will be visiting after Budapest, plan for 1-2 hours of wait in the train station to purchase them. All in all, Budapest was nice to visit and we would go back in the future.
Must see
A friend of ours lived and taught school in Budapest for about 4 years and recommended several places for us to see while we were there: 1. Terror Haza Museum (very sobering, but super awesome, probably the best thing we did) - building was the actual SS/Arrow Cross party HQ during WWII and has now been made into a museum of what people went through during that era. This is on Andrássy Ut which is also pretty to walk along. 2. Margit Sziget (Margaret Island) - in the middle of the Danube, very pretty with gardens, petting zoo, convent ruins, 12th C chapel, waterpark, fountain that flows to classical music, etc. 3. Dohany Street Synagogue (tour with cemetery, memorial, & museum) - largest synagogue in Europe and 2nd largest in the world! 4. Castle Hil/District 5. Parliament Area (including building in front of Parliament that still has bullet holes from 1956 revolution and 1940's era bronzed shoes memorial for holocaust victims located South of building on the concrete wall at the Danube). 6. St. Stephen's Basilica. 7. Gerbaud Kavehaz All of these places were very nice to see and we enjoyed the adventure around the city :-) Also recommended that we did not have time to see are: Central Kavehaz, Oktogon Cafe, Cave Church, Gellert Hotel, Ajka Crystal shop, Vasarcarnok (shopping market), and Szechenyi furdo (mineral baths). We also did not have a chance to taste palicsinta (stuffed crepes).
Dining
There was a nice pizza place on the block in front of Central Kavehaz (which was closed when we were there), but I can't remember the name. Gerbaud Kavehaz and TGI Friday's on the corner near (on?) Andrassy Ut. This Friday's is a MUST stop if you are dying for more than .25 - .3 liters of drink at a meal. They actually have bottomless soft drinks!! This was the only place we visited in Central Europe that did. Granted, the food was a little expensive, so maybe that is how they recoup their drink costs. Otherwise, make sure you bring a bottle of water with you everywhere for a drink supplement if you are used to being well-hydrated! A complimentary glass of water is not the norm at restaurants....they usually gave us one when we asked, but at room temperature, and it seemed like a big inconvenience. We definitely have a much greater appreciation for customer service at home now.
