“Cairns in winter is the perfect climate”
Beach and palm trees inside the hotel area - water a bit cold at first but very refreshing - lagoon pool and a swimming pool. Easy to get to the Great Barrier reef and the rainforest. Stayed three nights. Raintree shopping centre and wine store 5 minutes walk across the road. Don't go to the local pubs - catch a taxi into Cairns - small city but very welcoming. The matress was too soft the first night but on request the hotel just sorted it out with a new one when we got back to the room. For the price quite stunning really and refreshed my wife's belief that I can book a good place to stay.
“Great Pools and Even Better Service”
The rooms are recently renovsated and most rooms have a pool view, with 3 pools and well kept grounds it was a great value for a family on a budget. With transportaion pick up for most of the major attractions right at the hotel it makes it easy for families if you don't have a car. The hotel offers transport to the waterfont or the bus terminal for a fee as well as airport pickup. The staff was more than helpful when booking events, transportation and advice on local attractions. There is plenty of free parking if you haved a car and there property has a security patrol. All in all a good deal with great staff.
“Fine for One Night”
The Palm Royale Cairns was ok for one night. The pool view was nice. The beds sagged and the air conditioning was loud which kept my mother awake during the night. The hotel listed airport transportation on the website but it is not complimentary. We ended up calling our own cab to the airport which was more convenient and less expensive for 5 people than the bus pick-up they recommended. The staff was friendly and the desk was manned all night which was nice since we had to leave at 4AM. The primary reason we stayed at this hotel was the lower cost and for that reason, I would recommend it for a short stay in Cairns.
“Worst Bed Ever”
We stayed at this hotel on our way in and out of Cairns in different rooms (5 nights apart) and it was disappointing both times. I have no idea who let them claim that this was a 4 star property but it was incredibly far off from being one and extremely out of date. Both rooms had a bunch of bugs in them when we checked in ranging from ants to moths. The shower and amenities were low quality but perfunctory. The TV was clearly from 1985 as well. The real issue though was the bed, they sell you a king bed on this site but what you really get is a thin old futon mattress with an egg-crate foam pad on top and a metal bar down the center. It might have been the most uncomfortable bed that I ever slept on and certainly not romantic. When I called the front desk they told me all of their beds were like that, it was not just our room so they couldn't do anything. Also since they are so far away from the city center of Cairns they try to trick tourists with a "courtesy" bus into the city which they charge $4 each way for. Meanwhile the public bus (the bus stop is a block away) which is very clean and runs more frequently is only $2.20. I would have canceled our second stay there the night before we left Cairns but I guess that is why they are non-refundable rooms. As my third time in Cairns I can tell you with confidence that I would have rather stayed in the hostel I stayed in when I was a back packer, it was cleaner and had a real bed!
