Posted Jan 12, 2015

Nice Staff - friendly and helpful check-inPosted Jan 1, 2015
Pros: Staff was friendly at the reception. We received good instructions. Luggage service worked well.
Cons: The breakfast was below our expectation and some fruits were maybe already past the best before date. Staff did not share too many smiles...
Location: The children's park is just on the other side of the road.
Hotel is maybe a bit outdated and in need of a small update. However, the staff at the reception really made our stay enjoyable. Check-in and service was really nice and friendly. We only stayed for one night, but still enjoyed the pool area, which was great for our 5 and 3 year old. The restaurant staff might need a day off, not too many smiles to be seen in the breakfast table.

Tired hotel - needs updating and cleaning.Posted Jan 1, 2015
Pros: We didn't like much about the hotel at all. The breakfast was about the best thing, as well as the staff being helpful.
Cons: EVERYTHING. The hotel has a tired feel about it. The rooms are tired and need major refurbishment. For the rate paid, we were very disappointed.
Location: It's close enough to Cairns to walk on a cool evening, however on a hot day to get to the swimming area at the Esplanade would require a car trip.
We, 2 adults and 2 children, stayed for one night at Rydges Tradewinds. We normally stay at the Pullman Hotels in Cairns, however these were booked out. On arrival the check-in was easy. On our level, the corridor to our room was very musty and hot and it's not what you would expect of a large hotel. When we arrived in our room, the refrigerator door was open, so there was water on the carpet and the milk for tea/coffee was hot. We advised reception of this and they left a note with housekeeping. The overall condition of the room was tired, with the TV being the newest item in the room. We had quick showers before going out to dinner. The bathroom was full of cracked tiles and there was hair in the bathtub. There were only 3 towels for a room booked for 4 people. Our nights sleep was terrible. The beds were sponges and the pillows soft. The airconditioning continued to rattle and wheeze throughout the night. On a plus note, the breakfast we received with our room was good and provided a decent selection of food. Very disappointed for the price paid. Had this been a budget room, we could understand the condition. However, this was a room in a large hotel which receives many international visitors. Not impressed at all. We regularly stay in Cairns as we live over an hours drive away. We won't be staying at Rydges again.
