Poor rooms

Posted Jul 21, 2014
Stayed in room 203 on 19 July - at check in I was told i'd been upgraded but was soon disappointed. When I entered the room the first thing that hit you was the terrible smell of stale smoke (clearly a former smoking room), the upgrade clearly only referred to the size of the room. This room is in desperate need of refurb it must be at least 20 years old. No sheets on the bed except for the bottom one, only covers is a brown fleece blanket which just felt old and dirty and didn't want to use it but no other option - late back after a 40th birthday party. There was a private event in the function room which was clearly audible in our room until gone Midnight. The next morning we checked out to be told we had a £26 bar bill - we hadn't used the bar! To the credit of the desk staff she could see immediately it had been charged to the wrong room. The only thing that salvaged the experience was the breakfast which was fantastic as was the very welcoming waiting staff. This hotel is barely 3 star in terms of accommodation and definitely not worth the £185 per night price tag. Very disappointed - I live in london and Cambridge is my hometown and was looking forward to staying here with my partner declaring the hotel the best in Cambridge - I feel rather foolish now........

Central position, big rooms, slow staff

Posted Jul 12, 2014
Pros: Location
Cons: Comfort of the beds
Location: Location is the best thing
The room was large and quiet at evening/night. However, the two beds were pretty uncomfortable (probably quite hold), and there was some renovation going on, so starting from more or less 8:00AM there was an unpleasant sound of an hammer. Breakfast was good, the staff good. However, I tried to have a late lunch and another time a simple lunch, and the staff was quite slow, essentially they forgot me both times. This was annoying given I was on a business trip and had to go to meetings

Lovely stay, lovely weather

Posted Jul 3, 2014
Pros: location, food, staff
Location: punting, shopping, walking, visiting the collages
We stayed there for 2 days to put my son's stuff in storage prior to him starting university in October. I'd never visited Cambridge before and it is beautiful, charming, small, and welcoming. It's a walking town, no need for a car. The hotel was perfect with 2 beds per room and breakfast included. We had dinner there one night, the staff could not have been more helpful and the food was delicious. The hotel is centrally located and within easy walking distance of everything. Went punting and that was fun. Visited Grantchester on the second day - another beautiful day out. Woul stay there again in a heartbeat.
